FIRST of all you guys, I went go see my USCG recruiter & I told him that I want to be a "small special boat unit" that deals with pirates & navy drug trafficers. My recruiter he told me he told me that 34% chance that I will take a bullet with my name on it. I look his ribbons & he had a purpule heart with a 1 gold star & a silver star ribbon with bronze oak leaf. What do you have or who are calling a *****???

Well i have not been to combat myself. but i can tell you this, if you join coast guard your chances for 1-100 of ever seeing combat are about .5. Unless you get into drug interdiction jobs. |

Gotta go with Mr Gordon and Shea on this one.
As a Marine Vet I would never get on here and tell War Stories especially to some one like you who thinks the Coasties go after Pirates.
As for that 34% Chance I find that hard to believe. |

You will not likely get someone who has actually seen combat to tell you their "war" stories online. The ones that are willing to do it are probably not telling you the truth. |

I wouldn't believe your recruiter... The USCG does what its title says it does. It guards the coast. The Navy deals with the pirates. I would have to say if you want to do any of the things you just mentioned, join the navy. |

First off, you will NOT be looked at like the Guard or Reserves. I'm deployed now, and my active duty counter parts completely respect the guard and reserves because they know that we're in the same boat that they are.
Please remember, that the USCG is not a branch of military unless we are at war. The USCG falls under the Department of Transportation. If you want combat, I recommend the Marines or the Army (God Bless them). If you'd rather have a "safer" job, I recommend the Air Force. |

The coast Guard? LOL....not your typical GI Joe. If you plan on fighting in a war just be forewarned that if you are USCG you are going to be made fun of by the normal troops...your in the same categories as Reserves or National Guard. |
