As a Brit our most celebrated victories are.

Waterloo (1815)- Essentially the battle that ended the reign of Napoleon, and destroyed the 'invincible' French Imperial army.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_waterloo

Trafalgar (1805)- Naval Battle where the British defeated the French and Spanish in a tactical masterclass from Horatio Nelson

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Trafalgar

Rorke's Drift (1879)- The British equivalent of the 300 Spartans. 140 British riflemen defeated an attack by 4000 maniacal Zulus.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rourke%27s_drift

Battle Of Britain (1940)- HItler planned to destroy the British Air Force so he could dominate the skies and prepare for a German invasion of Britain. Despite being hopelessly outnumbered the British had superior planes (Spitfire) and high quality pilots. Quality beat quantity, and the Germans were defeated and Hitler never got close to invading Britain afterwards

The forgotten war of 1812.
Britain against the USA.

Too many to mention. You have to remember that the armed forces gained Britain the biggest empire the world has ever known.
No mean feat for such a small country.

In my opinion! The most famous battles fought and won are:-The Battle of Waterloo in 1815 against the French led by Napoleon Bonaparte!

The second most famous Battle the British won assisted by the Canadians was the Battle of Bladensburg against the Americans on August 24th 1814!Which resulted in General Winder of the USA being outclassed by General Ross of Britain! This was known as the 'Bladensburg Races!Because it was over so quickly! And resulted in the White House being burned down!

At the risk of being called a pedant but 'Great Britain' did not exist before the act of Union 1st May 1707 so the battles that pre-date this that have been mentioned such as Hastings and Agincourt were actually fought by the English.
I'd say the 'Battle of Britain' when the British stood alone against the horrors of Nazi Germany deserves the title. To quote Winston Churchill:
'Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few'

Don't know, but candidates must include Waterloo (1815); Trafalgar (1805); Balaclava (in Crimea; 1854); Gallipoli (1915); the Somme (1916); Battle of Britain (1940) and El Alamein (1942), in my opinion, as they are famous in the way that the "forgotten" war of 1812-14 is not...

I'd rule out Hastings, Agincourt, etc., and anything else before 1707, because they were fought not by the British as such, but by the English.

Agincourt in 1415
Waterloo in 1815
The Battle of Britain 1940

The greatest land battle the British Army ever fought was at Waterloo [18th June 1815] when Wellington's army finally ended French Rule in Europe. It was a decisive victory as it was over in one day, with the result that the French Grand Armee was in ruins by 7.30 in the evening. Napoleon never recovered from this, and British & Allied troops occupied Paris.
Other than that there was the Crimean War in 1854 which included the [Glorious Mistake!] Charge of the Light Brigade.
You could include the Somme during WW1 also.
Hope this helps!

Waterloo in 1815. A London railway station was named after the battle. It marked the start of the Pax Britannica, but then again you could argue that the naval battle of Trafalgar (1805) confirmed Britain's maritime dominance for the following century. A London Square was named after it.
Waterloo wa the decisive victory of the Allies over France of the Second Napoleonic War. There was no major European War (involving allies) until the outbreak of WWI in 1914.

They weren't know for a single battle since they have had thousands of battles. The guys practically became the model of what Imperialism is. Thats what they were known for.

Probably the battle of hastings in 1066 against the french. It changed the face of britain forever.

We've had loads of famous battles during the world wars, trafalgar ,waterloo,War of independance, etc etc. but I would say Hastings was the one that had the most effect on the country
