ummm ccudd13, Napoleon was French...he won a lot wars and took over the main land side of Europe....only reason he was finally beaten is he went into Russia in the winter.
He is debatable the greatest military genius of history.
To the future dictators out there...never ever go into Russia in the winter...this has been the number one down fall of many dictators....general winter. |

The French Army is globally bigger and better equipped. At face value, it's far better. The reality is, however, that it is largely a joke.
The new French Army is an all-professional force which suffers from poor morale and poor leadership, both in the senior military ranks and politically. Some of the soldiers and junior officers are reasonable, but the top is rubbish.
Many young officers complain of the inability to get things done; it is a (justifiable) French tradition not to trust the military, so pressure from above is high, and politics more important than soldiering ability. It is very much a top-down army. Contrast this with British Forces, where decisions are generally taken at the lowest competent level. Political interference is high and stifles initiative, both in the field when deployed, and at home. Furthermore, most cadre personnel such as Officers and NCOs are rotated every three to five years, with the objective of destabilizing personal relationships and therefore keeping the Army obedient to its political masters. The result is that you do not see the degree of serious unit cohesion that you find in British Forces, where your Regiment is very much your object of allegiance.
Training in most non-elite units is poor, based on drills evolved for a massive conscript army, and still essentially unchanged. Again, rocking the boat in order to speed things along, or modifying SOPs, is badly looked upon and can lead to the premature death of a career. This in turn causes frustration and poor morale. Many soldiers join up just for a decent bit of professional training, not as soldiers; they do not want to fight, and do not see warfighting as the Army's (we hope unexploited) objective.
Recruiting tends to concentrate on "What you can learn", rather than "what you can do", with the result that many volunteers stay long enough to learn a trade, and then leave rather than re-enlist.
Finally, their equipment, while slowly improving, suffers from the "buy French at all costs" syndrome, which means that some of the more important bits of kit are not much good. The Leclerc tank was trialled at Bovington, and found to be over-technical and fragile - not war-proof. Although it is incredibly hi-tech, the hi-tech wasn't solid or resistant enough. Their infantry equipment, by-and-large, is abysmal; webbing is badly designed, the uniforms impractical, etc, etc. Only the FAMAS rifle is any good, and that does not use NATO ammunition despite being 5.56mm calibre.
As I said, the French Army looks good on paper...
But for their ability to fight, I'd prefer to have the Spanish by my side any day. |

France has the "force de frappe" (nuclear weapons) and that alone makes them more powerful than Spain. |

Both countries have a decent military. I would say that France probably has the edge over Spain. The Foreign Legion is basically a government sponsored mercenary force. It was designed so that France could fight without having to suffer the effects of war weariness that beset a democracy at war. |

France. It has the second most expensive military in the world. That could mean the troops are paid a lot, they have good equipment or both. |

France's has the more powerful and no the military isn't as sissy as people think. The government surrended in WW2 and yet the parts of the people did fight in the Underground. Don't forget all the soldiers they lost in WW1 (1,397,800) and they didn't surrender. And they did support us in the Lebanon Civil War in 1982 and the Gulf War 1990-1991.
You decide:

Both have strong militaries. France's conventional military is much better though. |

France over Spain - hands down.
France has an atom bomb, Spain doesn't.
That's only one difference, but ought to be enough. |

I'm afraid I will have to disagree about France having the best military. Spain's military may be smaller and have lesser tech abilities, but France's military would surrender before the fight really begun.
By the way, Spain has a heck of a Special Forces team.
Remember: the French Foreign Legion is made up of NON-French soldiers. |

Spain let the world know what they were made of after their trains were bombed ''Kill our people and we well do as you ask'' Both would surrender to each other This yank is contemptuous of them both. When times get hard they are worth about as much as a bucket of warm spit |

Apples and oranges. You should compare France to some place like Luxemburg or Switzerland. No, Switzerland could beat them too. How about Berkley, CA. |
