They never owned it, it was leased.
Beginning as a trading port in the 19th century, Hong Kong was a dependent territory of the United Kingdom from 1842 until the transfer of its sovereignty to the People's Republic of China in 1997. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China, often referred to as "The Handover", occurred on July 1, 1997.
Don't worry, no need to convert your HK Dollars to PRC Yuan at the moment because The Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Hong Kong stipulate that Hong Kong operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2047, or fifty years after the transfer. This means that nothing will change in how their laws or currency are handled until then.
Hope this helps. |

Because the only part of Hong Kong which was actually owned by Britain was Hong Kong Island itself; not Kowloon and the New Territories which were Chinese territory loaned to Britain on a 99 year lease which ran out a few years ago. Kowloon was vastly more built up and industrious than the island, which is hilly and not readily useful for any form of industry and indeed only makes up a small part of the area now known as Hong Kong. Although the island was directly owned by Britain, it was deemed to be not worth the effort of keeping it without the rest of Hong Kong so it was all handed to China when the lease on Kowloon and the New Territories expired.
Hey, Alaskamusher2, first read my answer then go shove your answer somewhere the sun doesn't shine. Well done, though, for showing your complete and utter ignorance. |

Because they leased it for 99 years before 1997. What the Brits should've done was give HK independence before 1997 which would still legally end British leasing terms. Too late now.
And thanks, I'll take the thumbs down as thumbs up. |

are you closely related to RayN-here.. you do nae make much sense either
but to answer your question .
. the UK leased Hong Kong we never owned or conquered it. at the end of the lease it was returned. the UK could nae afford to lease it again and most of all China did nae want to let it out. the UK built up the value over time and niow Hong Kong is one of the richest pieces of real estate in the world. so china took control back.
can't blame them for that |

Hong Kong was a British Colony. The British leased the new territories from China. The N T are on mainland China.
When the NT lease expired it was not viable to run Hong Kong as a stand alone colony because all the water was supplied by a reservoir in the NT and one in China itself.
With the agreement of all parties it was decided to hand the whole lot over to the Chinese. |

Yep it was on a lease and the lease was up.
The Brits managed to do a lot of favours though when negotiating giving back Hong Kong to the Chinese. The Brits negotiated that when they gave power back to China, that China would respect the democratic nature of Hong Kong, and their freedom of speech. China has so far respected this wish, and Hong Kong has much more freedom of press than mainland China. |

Hong Kong is an Island of the coast of China, and we never owned it. WE leased it from China for 99 years, and when the lease expired, we had to give it back to the chinese. |

Great Britain had only a lease on Hong Kong, as part of a treaty with China, along with other "treaty" ports. The treaty came after the Opium Wars between China and Great Britain. The lease was not renewed and the British withdrew in 1997.
Great Britain did grant independence to many of its colonies after the Second World War, including India and Pakistan. Later, independence was granted to Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), Bechuanaland (Botswana), and Kenya. Great Britain still has as some colonies, like Gibraltar. |

Britain owned Hong Kong island and Kowloon after the Opium Wars in the 1840s, but most of the territory of Hong Kong was the New Territories - land which was leased from China for 99 years from 1898. The lease ran out at the end of June 1997 and the New Territories had to be handed back, and it made no sense to keep the rest as the NT supplied most of the populations' water, among other things. Britain and China came to an agreement on handing HK back in 1984, and HK is now a Special Autonomous Region of the Peoples Republic of China, with a separate political system, money, legal system, etc. |

China effectively 'gave' Hong Kong to Britain, as they were not very powerful, and having problems. The time they allowed Britain to have it for ran out in 1997, at which point China had gained wealth and power. Therefore Britain gave it back to China. |

if you agree with imperialism - they did own Hong Kong island and they did own Kowloon - but they leased the New Territories for 99 years (this lease running out in 1997).
Hong Kong (island) and Kowloon were handed back at the same time as the new terrirtories for a number of reasons - some being political, others being economic.
China believes the Brits never 'owned' Hong Kong - they took it away from china |

look up the "boxer"rebellion....
the uk was being over run by the drug trade passing thru hong kong to the the uk
so the uk leased it from china to put stop to drug trafficing(didnt they do well) when the lease ran out it was handed back to china(in the 1990,s)i am sure but it may have been 1997 |

England don't lease Scotland. That's like saying Germany lease France. Scotland is part of Great Britain, but very much it's own country. Hong Kong was part of the British Empire through the lease, as stated by many of the folk here. The people of Hong Kong wanted independence in 1996 and received it; the Yanks are still afraid of China being all communist. Good on them! |

Englnad has a rule/law that they can only occupy another country for 100 years, its a 100 year lease. So after 100 years they had to give back hong hong and india and a lot of there other colonies. thats why they only have Scotland now and i don't know how that works. |
