Housing for non-married couples (USAF)?
|
I graduate/commission next Spring. I want my girlfriend to come with me, but I don't want to rush into a marriage simply for convenience reasons (I'd rather make sure we can adjust to the new lifestyle first). Are there any housing opportunities for non-married couples (letting them live in an on-base apartment for singles, etc? Not sure what the rules are). Depending on my duty station I may be required to live on base, such as for flight school. Just want to know what my options are. Thanks! Additional Details R, to answer your question I'd like to fly fighters. Taking it one step at a time, though. I'm a pilot select, but that could change at my flight physical. Crossing my fingers nothing goes wrong there!

As an officer, it's a bit different. Yes, you will probably be required to living in bachelor officer quarters during flight school. Except for training bases, most AF bases no longer have BOQs, so it's not really an issue after that. Once you get to your first duty station you will be eligible to receive BAH and live off base. You will get it at the single rate for your rank, and it's generally meant to cover about 85% of your housing expenses.
Since she is not your wife, she is not allowed to live on-base in any way. Only spouses and dependants are allowed to live in family quarters, and only active duty are allowed to live in the dorms. |

you option is to choose off post housing and have her move in.
For on post housing you need to be married for her to live there. |

In the eyes of the military, you're either Single or married. |

There is no military housing available for cohabiting couples. I comes out of your own pocket. With a commission you will probably receive BAH for off post subsistence, (not sure about flight school). Good luck to you |

If you're going to Sheppard AFB, you'll be required to live on base in the single officer dormitories. That rule was put in place in 2003.
I know you don't get to pick which aircraft you fly (yet), but what do you want to fly? Fighter, cargo, bomber? |

while in a training statues you usually live on post. but since you are going to be an officer, there are very few places left that have on-post single officer quarters. so you will most likely get BAH and live off base. at that point you can live with who ever you want. many new officers go into a room mate agreement to get a better place. but again. you can live with who ever and where ever you want.
the military only recognizes married or single. not BF/GF or even legally separated.
and smart move about not getting married for all the wrong reasons. active duty LifeStyle isn't for everyone. for you, you will have to wait 4-6 years before you can leave it behind. SHE can leave at any time. |

There is no housing for non married couples, in order to be eligible for military housing you must be married. She will not have base access unless you are with her, she cannot use any of hte facilites at all. You can be required to live in barracks and you can be stationed overseas. You might be allowed to live off base and collect BAH w/o dependents. |

There is no such thing as a "non-married couple" in the military. You're either single or married. |

The military does not recognize boyfriend/girlfriend relationships only legal marriages with marriage certificates registered with DEERS. This is in every branch of the military.
So unfortunately if you want to live with her you are going to have to pay out of pocket which might be rather expensive depending on where you live.
Sorry and good luck |
