How are the US soldiers deployed in Iraq heroes protecting the American way of life?

How are the US soldiers deployed in Iraq heroes protecting the American way of life?

I hear this statement quite a bit both on the news and spoken by individuals but I fail to see how any of this is true. Here is why I think that this statement is nothing but hot air:

1. Being a soldier is a job. A job that is not forced upon an individual but rather a job that an individual chooses to do and gets compensated accordingly. Part of a soldier’s job is to engage in active combat when instructed to do so by their superiors. Should a soldier be automatically deemed heroic for merely doing their job?

2. Iraq (or Saddam Hussein) had absolutely, positively, nothing to do with 911! Even the President of the USA, George W. Bush, publicly acknowledged this fact. So I fail to see how any military involvement in Iraq is protecting the “American way of life” in any way, shape, or form.

Can anyone make an intelligent argument of how every US soldier in Iraq is a hero and/or how US military presence in Iraq is protecting the American way of life?

the american way of life is based on consumption and dependent on cheap energy, which is in abundance in iraq.
also saddam had threatened to convert to the euro from the dollar for his oil transactions. we are just making sure we get the oil this country needs to operate.

ANY man who steps forward to serve in America's Armed Forces is a hero, sworn to protect the American way of life!!
Nice try, "genius"!

What a poser.
Saddam is dead because he ignore 14+ UN rules of surrender from Desert Storm.

Maybe if you read more.

Is a firefigher a hero for running into a burning building to save a kid? Of course. The difference is the "burning building" is across the globe, where we want to keep it. As long as there is fighting or pressure put on the extremists in their own territory, the chances of a large terrorist attack on home soil is lessoned.
That is how they are heroes and how they protect the American way of life. We have freedoms that would slowly go away if we had to increase anti-terrorism laws to protect the people. The police cannot do it themselves, so ferderal agents/troops would have to be in the cities and counties taking actions. This decreasing the natural rights and privileges we enjoy today.
To say the are adequately compensated is the overstatement of the year. These guys and gals are paid barely above poverty to risk their lives in a place that is mentally, physically, and ven spiritually hostile every waking moment.
I would compare it to a black man in Alabama or Viriginia during the height of the racial tensions. Not wanted, or wanted dead. Those men, women and children had to live like that. Were they paid. They didn't even have a choice but rarely are they called heores.
At least these soldiers are given some money. But make no mistake the money is not why they do it.

Well by your avitar no matter what is said by anyone will not be enough to convince you how our fighting men and woman protect your way of life.

oh my gosh you're right!

the bleeding heart liberals, extreme leftists, hippies!

those guys are heroes! because it is truly heroic to sit on the fence and moan and whine and never bother to get facts straight.

Wow...you really are clueless aren't you. Yes, those serving in the armed forces are doing so willingly. It takes a special kind of person to sacrifice his life in the military; it's a job that not everyone can do. They get compensated, but I would hardly say "accordingly". They sacrifice much more thatn I'm sure you realize (or even care to acknowledge). People get much more compensation for other jobs than those in the military.

Maybe it's been stated that they had nothing to do with 9/11, but Iraq, more significantly Saddam Hussein, has been a threat for decades. You've obviously never had a loved one called in the middle of the night to deploy the next day because of Saddam Hussein.

Nobody is going to be able to answer you to make you understand anything, so go ahead and live in your little bubble that our military men and women are keeping safe for you.

i_forget_myself
You do make a very good point. It's a job, and hero is a big word to put on every soldier.

(For the most part) They are BRAVE, they are patriotic, and they are honorable. But no, every soldier is not really a "hero" 'specially the ones that run away... :(

My only answer than can be...thanks for the points!

Oh, and my soldier is MY hero...does that count?

you cannot tell me this war will not have strategic value for decades to come, for us and the rest of the west. You need to quit thinking in terms of right and left. All westerners freek out if they dont continue to get richer and this "forces" our leaders to "produce". Yes, if westerners quit driving SUVs and spending ungodly amounts of money on things we dont need then the world would change, but that isnt gonna happen. Im not trying to tell you the way it should be, im tellin you the way it is.

Simple. After 9/11, we attacked Afghanistan. Shortly after that Saddam kicked the UN weapons inspectors out of Iraq. This was enough cause to go in and disarm and remove Saddam.

During this time, terrorists have entered Iraq hoping to take control as soon as America leaves. This would be bad for the Middle East, our allies, and over time, the US.

If you cannot follow that, you never will.

iamct...many of my friends and family are there. THEY OVERWHELMINGLY SUPPORT THE WAR.

iamct01
I think they should be given credit for doing as they are told regardless of their feelings, that takes much control.

I found this in a support group, and this is why we are in Iraq and Afghanistan. All service men and women are heroes because they put their lives on the line every day in an attempt to protect America from any harm.

DON'T CLOSE YOUR BLINDS

The other day, my nine year old son wanted to know why we were at
war. My husband looked at our son and then looked at me.

My husband and I were in the Army during the Gulf War and we would be honored to serve and defend our Country again today. I knew that my husband would give him a good explanation. My husband thought for a few minutes and then told my son to go stand in our front living room window.

He said "Son, stand there and tell me what you see?"
"I see trees and cars and our neighbor's houses." he replied.

"OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the
United States of America and you are President Bush.
Our son giggled and said "OK.

"Now son, I want you to look out the window and pretend that every
house and yard on this block is a different country" my husband said.

"OK Dad, I'm pretending.

"Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and pretend
you see Saddam come out of his house with his wife, he has her by the
hair and is hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in the face, he throws her on the ground, then he starts to kick her to death. Their children run out and are afraid to stop him, they are screaming and crying, they are watching this but do nothing because they are kids and they are afraid of their father. You see all of this, son....what do you do?"

"Dad?"

"What do you do son?"

"I'd call the police, Dad.

"OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations. They take your call. They listen to what you know and saw but they refuse to help.

What do you do then son?"

"Dad.......... but the police are supposed to help!" My son starts
to whine.

"They don't want to son, because they say that it is not their place or your place to get involved and that you should stay out of it," my husband says.

"But Dad...he killed her!!" my son exclaims.

"I know he did...but the police tell you to stay out of it.

Now I want you to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor who
you're pretending is Saddam turn around and do the same thing to his children.

"Daddy...he kills them?"

"Yes son, he does.

What do you do?"

"Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my next
door neighbor to help me stop him." our son says.

"Son, our next door neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to
get involved as well. He refuses to open the door and help you stop him," my husband says.

"But Dad, I NEED help!!! I can't stop him by myself!!"

"WHAT DO YOU DO SON?" Our son starts to cry.

"OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street saw you ask
for help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands taller and puffs out his chest.

Guess what he does next son?"

"What Daddy?"

"He walks across the street to the old ladies house and breaks down
her door and drags her out, steals all her stuff and sets her house on
fire and then..he kills her.

He turns around and sees you standing in
the window and laughs at you.

WHAT DO YOU DO?"

"Daddy..."

"WHAT DO YOU DO?" Our son is crying and he looks down and he
whispers,

"I'd close the blinds, Daddy.

My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks him.

"Why?"

"Because Daddy ... the police are supposed to help people who needs
them ... and they won't help ... You always say that neighbors are
supposed to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either...they won't help
me stop him...I'm afraid....I can't do it by myself Daddy ..... I can't
look out my window and just watch him do all these terrible things
and...and.....do nothing ... so .... I'm just going to close the blinds
.... so I can't see what he's doing ....... and I'm going to pretend
that it is not happening."

I start to cry.

My husband looks at our nine year old son standing
in the window, looking pitiful and ashamed at his answers to my
husband's questions and he says...

"Son"

"Yes, Daddy."

"Open the blinds because that man... he's at your front door...WHAT DO YOU DO?"

My son looks at his father, anger and defiance in his eyes.

He balls up his tiny fists and looks his father square in the eyes, without
hesitation he says: "I DEFEND MY FAMILY DAD!! I'M NOT GONNA LET HIM HURT MOMMY OR MY SISTER, DAD!!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD, I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM!!!!!"

I see a tear roll down my husband's cheek and he grabs our son to
his chest and hugs him tight, and says... "It's too late to fight him,
he's too strong and he's already at YOUR front door son.....you should
have stopped him BEFORE he killed his wife, and his children and the old
lady across the way.

You have to do what's right, even if you have to do it alone, before its too late." my husband whispers.

THAT scenario I just gave out is WHY we are at war with Iraq.

When good men stand by and let evil happen son, THAT is the greatest atrocities in the world won't affect him.

"YOU MUST NEVER BE AFRAID TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT! EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALONE!" BE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! BE PROUD OF OUR TROOPS!! SUPPORT THEM!!! SUPPORT AMERICA SO THAT IN THE FUTURE OUR CHILDREN WILL NEVER HAVE TO CLOSE THEIR BLINDS..."

This should be printed in every newspaper and posted in every school
in America. Of course that won't happen so we'll use the Internet

Whyruafraid?
No, a soldier cannot automatically be deemed heroic just for being a soldier. But when emotions run high, people will call anything "heroic" in order to justify and elevate it in their minds. All wars are sacred to those who fight in them, and all soldiers are heroes to those who support them.

There has been no proof at all that concurs with the idea that military involvement in Iraq is protecting the American Way of Life. This seems to be a popular catchphrase that defenders of the war throw out in the hopes that the great unwashed will fall for it hook, line, & sinker (which they seem to every time, lol) and which the freethinker distances himself from as the repugnant smell of b.s. drifts from it. "We'd rather fight them over there so that they don't attack us here", and "We are over there spreading democracy" are prime examples of this.

We are deploy in Iraq also because of the Sea Line of Communcation.
Iraq being a problem means interfering with the United States SLOC.

The United States is a republic but also use some democracy ideas. People in the United States live by that type of government and Iraq also live by that type of government. Iraq has some problems right now and its the UNited States fault so its our duty to correct that mistake. To show that this way of government is the most reliable.
