How can I combat terrorism directly?

These are all great answers. But I like the question most. The fact is, no matter what agency you work for, its counterterrorism department will probably be the toughest to get into. They also contain some of America's greatest minds.

First, I would say to you: Decide what level you want to fight terror on. Do you want to be operational internationally(CAG, DevGru-or-Delta/SEAL 6)? Do you want to be operational in the US (HRT)? By operational, I mean the man with the gun in his hand taking it to the enemy. There is Intelligence, and this is where the largest scope of jobs are the counterterror arena. Everything from signals interception to straight up HUMINT (human intelligence) or spying.

It could never hurt to learn Arabic, Farsi, Dari, or Pushtu.

"If you see something, say something". Always be aware of your surroundings and note oddities. Follow the "Sloop" rule: If something or someone is out of place, then record it or report it.

Don't start me on the military because the Navy is the best, but let me point out a few things. In September of this year, do not vote for a Democratic candidate as they will end the war on terrorism. Next, start a neighborhood watch group, you cannot make it safer here by just fighting overseas. If you want to do something locally, join a police force. Want to do something within the US: work for the border patrol, coast guard, or the Trasportation Security Administration (TSA airport guys). And then, if you want to go international, join the national guard, army, air force, marine corps, or Navy, but regardless of who you choose, find somewhere that you are doing something you enjoy, not just "goin' thar ta kill sum budy" but going there to do what you do best. Every little bit you can do for your country fights terrrorism, but the best weapon you have is your freedom.

Besides joining the military, I think just keeping your eyes open and see everything up around you and contacting the proper authorities.

With the exception to putting on a military uniform and combating it directly - the best way to fight terrorism is to simply refuse to allow the terrorists change what you do or the way you do it.

The terrorist want you to change the way you life your life - if you simply refuse to change, they lose.

join the army, air force, or marines as an MP and go through SRT school. they're like germany's GSG 9, or france's GIGN, they specialize in counter terrorism.

Well since Bush is the biggest terrorist in the world at the moment why doncha get him and his kin outa the White House?
Why are the American people letting him continue??? How is it he has not been impeached? I guess you all bought in. And now he's spending you right down the toilet.
