i am a high school soph and i would like to go to west point , but i don't know how i can go from there to med school or what i am supposed to major in in college before med school and then will the military pay for my med school to . and will they let me go to med school if i am on active duty

I agree with Xavier. You pretty much have to excel in EVERYTHING just to get into West Point. Maintain a top GPA and be absolutely outstanding. Getting into medical school is competitive like you wouldn't believe. |

I'm not an expert but... you're planning your life 10-20 years from now! Surgeons go to medical school (4 years), then go into a residency for a specialty (up to 7 years for a surgeon), while working 100 plus hours a week.
I know in the Navy, there is an extremely SMALL number of ROTC/Academy graduates who get picked up for a medical scholarship. All Navy doctors I know went through a program AFTER they finished medical school or were picked up for a program after they finished college. In cases where they joined up after getting an M.D. some of their loans are being paid off by the military.
Ask West Point if they have these programs or talk to an Army officer recruiter about these.
If you are active duty they probably won't let you go to med school and do your day job at the same time. You will be putting in hundreds of hours a week studying and doing labs!
You don't need any specific major to get into med school. Actually, I think they prefer the non-science majors for the added diversity. Every school requires a different mix of courses, but they all focus on biology, chemistry, and some basic English. Ask the medical schools themselves or visit their websites. |
