It kinda depends what job you're going to do and in what branch. There's getting in shape for a PT test, and then there's getting in shape for a combat arms MOS. It also depends how much time you have before you go.
Generally, the US Army has seen a huge rise in the number of injuries during Basic/AIT/OSUT as a result of stress fractures. These injuries are a result of poor nutrition, and/or lower bone density as a result of a sedintary lifestyle (sitting on your butt in front of a computer/video game/TV instead of playing outside, sports, etc).
So...if you've been inactive, you need to gradually work yourself up to increase your bone density. That means the worst thing you can do is to go out running a lot. I'd recommend fast-paced walking on hilly terrain, NOT A TRACK. Depending on what kind of shape you're in, you can start off with 30 minutes, with a 5 minute warm up and cool down, up to an hour, at least 3 days a week, like Monday, Wednesday, Friday. On Tues and Thurs, I'd recommend doing something called "fartleks" (go ahead and giggle), which you can do on a 1/4 mile track. Start with one lap at a slow jog, and then sprint the straightaways and then slowly job around the curves. Try and go for at least 15 minutes to start off with, and try and get to at least 20 minutes, 30 minutes would be best. Be sure to do a lap at a slow jog to cool down.
As far as push-ups and sit ups go, I'd recommend going to a gym. Of course, you can do it the old fashion way, which is "muscle failure" (just keep doing them until you can't do anymore, rest, and do some more), but that's pretty boring. Be sure to get a trainer involved by telling them what you're trying to do and what you want to accomplish.
Usually recruiters will be helpful in this regard, but you can't count on it. |
