A legal alien is someone who is not a citizen, but has the legal right the be present (wherever they are). So, a tourist is a legal alien, as is someone who has been granted legal resident alien status.
Being in the army requires legal resident alien status, which can be applied for through immigration procedures. There are other legal alien statuses as well, such as foreign troops on detached duty. This is not a legal resident alien, but it is still a legal alien. |

You just need a green card and a social security card. My husband was in the U.S. Army for 3 years and he was not a citizen. He got his citizenship later. He could also speak english very well. |

You don't need to be a citizen, but you do need to be a resident. You can only join the military for 8 years max as a resident, and you cannot become an officer. if you become a citizen while serving, your good to go for the 20 yrs. good luck! |

Actually, there are some residency requirements, however you can serve in the military without having your citizenship, however in order to re-enlist past your first term, you then have to get your citizenship. Unless the rules have changed since I've been in the military, this is what I know. Talk to a recruiter. |

I appreciate your effort, but you must be a legal citizen to join the US army.
This is no reflection on you, but you can certainly understand why any nation's military can't let people join who are not citizens. It's just asking for trouble. |

its actually not as hard as you think to become a citizen, if you really feel you want the values that the army provides, then you should become a citizen and find out more about why exactly the army exists. i think you will get better value out of the whole experience. but i'm no expert and i probably don't know best but i'm just trying to help. I believe that if approved for military service in the US military, it gives you legal immigration status. To do this, I suggest that you call the MEPS office in San Diego, they will guide you on the things you need to do to make this work. We welcome you! |

You can't legally. You have to be a us resident alien (green card holder) if you are not a citizen to be in the Army. |

I am a volunteer with the navy Marine Corps relief society. We assist Navy and Marnie's (family included) with financial issues. Anyway, i have helped a few service members get their legalization papers. After that the service has assisted with them getting their citizenship. The navy website has guidelines listed that you must meet in order to join if you are NOT a citizen. Below is the navy website info and the army. |

I know you must be a legal alien to join the US military and then you can get citizenship later on. Plus, I know that there are many people who do this. However, you will have to be able to speak and understand english very well. There are recruiters in every town or at leats hear you. they can give you the specifics. |

well you can be in the army as long u show discipline and courage cuz im in the U.S. AIRFORCE and im mexican to... and i got in by showing that i can do it even though im not a citizen but i showed my courage |

But you can join per reg AR 11-3.6
As long as you live in a country that is registered as a teritory of the US.. Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, MicroNessia.... I work with people everyday who are not legal residents yet are still soldiers.. |
