How can we tell other nations not to have nuclear weapons when we have them ourselves?

This has always confused me. I just don't see the logic here. It seems condescending and hypocritical to tell someone it's wrong to have nuclear weapons when you have hundreds of them and are the only nation ever to have used them.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, signed or agreed to by every country in the world except 4 (India, Israel, Pakistan, and N. Korea). It says that we (US, UK, Russia, China, France) won't give nuclear weapons to any non-nuclear countries, nor help them get nuclear weapons capabilities. It also says that those countries who don't have nuclear weapons won't obtain them.
So we're really just enforcing something that every country has already agreed to. |

Because some countries are responsible enough to have them and others are not. Just like the general public is responsible enough to drink alcohol, but in the hands of an alcoholic, it is a bad idea. |

sigh....many other nations have them, we know who and how many. The others signed a nonproliferation treaty. Iran is one of them. We have every right on the planet to tell them no. |

Because we have strict controls over our and we will only use them in if we were nuked first however these nations have expressed the will to use them with out restrant(ie:iran saying they want to nuke Isreal....) |

Do you want a world where everybody has nukes?
Do you want a world where the US doesn't have nukes but Russia/China/North Korea/Iran do? |

The fact was the technology was discovered initially by the United States an Russia, causing the build up during the Cold War in a fear-driven push from one another. When the United States realized the horrific results of nuclear weaponry, they realized that it was technology that no one should have. If nuclear weapons got into the wrong hands, you wouldn't know until it was too late. |

On July 1, 1968 several nations signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This treaty says that nations that have signed and ratified the treaty will not research and try to obtain Nuclear Weapons.
Think of it as you signed a contract with someone then did the complete opposite. You would be open to the raminfications from other nations. The world has recongnized the nuclear states in the world and realize all of them have the mentallity to realize they use would ensure their own destruction.
The treaty also prevents signature nations who have nukes and the research from giving, selling, or transfering the info to any non-nuclear nations. |

as bill maher says "because we are better than them" and we are.
its not wrong to say our culture (western) is better, it is. we dont make our woman wear beekeeper suits, we dont stone people in public arenas, we dont threaten to wipe nations off the map because of religios differences.
would you like us to become xenophobic, lock down our borders to and from America, and pretend the worlds issues are theres to deal with and not ours to solve.
like it or not, we are the Romans. and the world went into 1000 years of assbackwardness when the Roman Empire fell. |

The problem is, do you really want every podunk nation with an unstable government or a dictatorial ruler to have nukes? The nuclear powers of the UN Security Council got together and created a treaty, which was passed by the UN, by the way, which called for "Non-Proliferation." The idea was that there were plenty of nukes as it was, and the spread of those weapons would be a serious threat to global security as well as survival. There has certainly been some slippage. Both India and Pakistan have aquired nukes, for example, as has Israel. But the treaty still stands, and the risk is still there. Maybe it is somewhat hypocritical of the five permanent Security Council nations to try to restrict the number of other nations which acquire nuclear arms, but it's also common sense. Both Russia and the US have serious reduced the number of nukes each country had since 1990. Britain and France have small arsenals, as well. China's arsenal has grown somewhat and been improved in terms of delivery systems of late, but each has a stake is supporting the non-proliferation pact. Imagine if Saddam had nukes at the time of the Iran-Iraq war, or the first Gulf War. And Iran's leadership has been so rabid about destroying Israel, that I'm not surprised we are opposed to their developing weapons grade nuclear technology, either, are you? |

You want to the straight dope?
its trying to remain at the top of the food chain....
in 1945 America made the first atom bomb. After they realised the U.S.S.R was making a similar device they came up with "arms reduction" talks
Iraq = they knew saddam may pose a threat to the region so they took him out
Iran = they know these pesky persian may pose a threat that's why they are beating the drums for another war
North Korea= they threatened to invade them but shut up quickly when they detonated an atom device |

It is condescending and hypocritical. But we've made a LOT of enemies being condescending and hypocritical, and the only way to maintain our dominance is by making sure as few peoples as possible have the capability do be able to do what we do, and the ones that do are in cahoots with us.
You're absolutely right. But if America all of a sudden started acting like a responsible member of the international community, everyone we've had our thumb on for the past century would strike back. |

Because the US government is a big bully, and thinks that, while other countries can't be trusted with power, we need to have it "just in case". I personally say that we should get the hell out of other countries affairs. We shouldn't be telling other nations not to do something when we are doing it ourselves. |
