How can you drop out of the military when you have a contract?

I don't understand. People talk about soldiers that drop out, but aren't you under a contract? How can you just leave?

You don't "just leave". In the long run, the military doesn't want people who don't want to be there.
It causes far less damage to morale to let them go than to force them to be there.

There are several reasons by which you can get out of the military. Yes, you have a contract, but sometimes it is better to get you out than to keep you in.

have you taken your duty oath yet? if not you can drop out.

You can't just drop out.

You can ask very nicely and they may let you out.

If you're a female and you get pregnant you have the option to get out.

Usually if somebody tells you that they dropped out, it usually means that they were forcibly ejected from the military due to behavior, committing a crime, or some other nefarious reason..
