You really should be ashamed of yourself for posting something sooo narrow minded about your own family member. All opinions of the war aside (who started it, why we're there, WHATEVER) he's VOLUNTEERING to do something more admirable than most people (yourself probably included) will ever imagine doing or have the nerve to deal with in a lifetime. Most people (strangers to your nephew) would be honored to have a Marine, Officer, Sailor, Pilot, etc in their presence; to hear the stories of the things they've seen and accomplished. Then there's YOU; ashamed that you're even related to him. That's very, very sad. |

I am proud of him, too. I think his decision to join the military is a great one. While you may disagree with the decisions of the leadership of this country, please try to keep that seperate in your mind and your heart from the men and women of the US military. They do not choose their assignments. They do not pick the battles they are sent into. But they did choose to support and defend the United States of America. And your nephew joins a very proud and honorable group of people who care enough about their country; their freedom; and the way of life their forefathers fought and died to create and maintain that they are are willing to put themselves in harm's way to ensure it "does not perish from this earth."
So please, disagree all you want with the government that involved us in Iraq. As an American that is your right. It is a right won through the blood and pain and death of the men and women who served in the past. But respect your nephew's choice and dedication.
I wish him well. May he serve honorably and return home to his loved ones safely. |

In any family, somebody is going to do or say something that you do not believe in. I wouldn't be ashamed of him I would just hope and pray that he comes home in one piece. What your nephew doesn't realize is the biggest threat is right there in his own family. If anyone need be concerned it should be you. The Marine Corps is going to take that stupid kid and mold him into a fighting machine. A finely honed killer will emerge, with a mission to destroy all of those who would do harm to this fantastic land of ours. He will be skilled and proficient to kill with his bared hands, he will be able to tear your jugular vein out with just his teeth, or dig a hole in your chest with his finger nails, and tear your heart out.
I think it's important that you tell him how ashamed you are, but do it in person, and not until he's home on leave following advanced infantry training. Sleep well! |

You are correct that Iraq is no threat to the US. Where did he get the idea that Iraq is going to destroy the USA? That is a stupid idea! By what means could Iraq destroy the US?
President Bush has stated that we are fighting in Iraq to guarantee freedom for the Iraqi people so they can acheive their "dreams". We went there to liberate them and now they're the enemy...something here does not compute.
However, I don't think it is shameful to join the Marines and defend your country, it just seems that your nephew has bought the propaganda and has joined for the wrong reasons... |
