I mean, soldiers back during WWII invaded beaches with machine guns blasting every other guy apart, they liberated concentration camps (not a pretty sight), and encountered way more "traumatic" stuff than just a bomb blowing up randomly in the street or something. You never hear about them coming home and going crazy and needing mental help or killing themselves..... so why is this new war so mentally challenging? I think our new soldiers arent as tough.

Your just not looking in the right places.
Look up "Battle Fatigue," or "Shell Shock."
The thing is, it was there, just people did not talk about it. It was not really until the 1960s that mental issues (not just military related but even things like bi-polar) were openly discussed.
Prior to WWII, if you had a relative that was mentally challenged in some way, they were kept out of site or put in mental instutions that didn't really treat the problems.
Also, if you watch some old movies from the 1950's, you may notice charcters in the background talking about WWII that have issues.
The movie Twelve-O'Clock High actually is about battle stress more then bombing runs over Europe. |

Because the media reports it every time a soldier gets a headache. |

The doctors were just as good at diagnosing mental health problems as they were fixing battle wounds back then. Obviously, both kinds of doctors are much better now. |

It wasn't talked about...just go see the film "Flags of our Fathers" to see what happened to those Marines. Some were pretty messed up. General Patton did not believe in shell shock, I guess that's why he slapped that one soldier around. |

People were more repressed in the 50s ... also it was much easier to lock someone up in a mental institution. Not to mention a suicide was commonly written up as a gun cleaning "accident" |
