How come the navies of the US, NATO, India, China, Russia and Iran cannot blow Somali pirates away?

All these countries have sent naval forces in the past year to tackle pirates of the Somalia coast. Yet the pirates are still around. Why?

Because you can't tell a pirate from a fishing boat unless they are attacking. If a pirate sees a naval vessel nearby, they start fishing. If they see only a cargo ship, they attack. They don't fly flags or anything. They use the fishing boats as cover. India tried it and found out it was just a fishing boat they blew up.

Its not like the Pirates live in the ocean, they live on land, where NATO has no actual presence in somalia.

So out on Sea, we can take out and stop a small number of them, but they will always come back with more from the nest. and that nest is somalia.

Ever looked at a map or the numbers?

The Somali coastline is 1,800 miles long. The EEZ extends out 200 miles from that coast. About 1.2 million square miles of ocean would need to be patrolled which would take several hundred ships to do a proper job of it. 25,000 ships per year pass through those waters. Somalia has no functioning government and thus no Navy or Coast Guard. Pirates off the Somali coast attack roughly 250 ships a year - a mere drop int he bucket of worldwide piracy.

NATO does not routinely patrol in this region. China and Iran can't. Russia might be able to mount a token effort. That leaves the highly overstretched U.S. Navy which really lacks the training, equipment and resources for the job.

The actual threat from Somali pirates as seen by the numbers is rather small while the area to be covered is vast. Can you see the problem?

The Somalian Coastline is too big.

When pirates make themselves open, they usually are pretty confident that a navy cannot attack them. Either through hostages, dangerous weapon, or something.

Basically if the pirates were killed alongside said hostages, there would be fierce political reprisals from the country/ies of the deceased hostages.

The price they should be forced to pay for engaging in offshore piracy of Merchant Ships is the sinking on sight of any vessel of theirs entering international waters.
