Well physically they will get you in shape, but it wont hurt to keep working out to get in better shape. Plus, when you join and go to boot camp you must stand out, work hard, be the best at everything. They will usually approach you in boot camp to see if you want to do that. When I was in the Air Force, they approached me in boot camp to see if I would like to become and Airborne Ranger. |

There are a couple of paths to become a "long tabber". The first is the 18X program which you sign up for when you first join. They send you to infantry school, then airborne school, then Selection. If you pass selection then you go on to the Q course, and on to other schools and whatever.
The second path is joining with another MOS and go to selection from there. You have to get to your parent unit first then sign up for selection, and if you pass selection then you go to jump school and so on. you can try out for SF from any MOS.
If you fail Selection then you have to go back to the MOS you chose (18X become 11BP (airborne infantry)). SF doesn't approach you from Basic, everyone and their mother tries out for SF and they would rather take those who have experiece than those who have no experience whatsoever. 18X gets taught more about passing selection due to going through swic which is preselection, but they get picked on more than the more experience soldiers, because the "swic babies" dont have the regular disipline, so they dont stand at prade rest for NCOs, and usually have to do more work. It used to be that SF dudes all had to be senior NCOs to join, because it required a certain level of experience and maturity, now they are hurting for people and are just accepting whoever can pass selection, and they are standing up more battallions and what not and have slots that need to be filled.
The biggest thing for you is to learn from basic and become disiplined, and show them you are a soldier first not some high speed cool guy with "chops and sunglasses" you have more than enough physical strengh and agility, but what i recommend you doing is rucking. That is what selection is, they will put 55 lbs to 100 lbs on your back and tell you to go. and you will spend many hours out in the boonies trying to find your points. They look for people who are smart, can learn well and never give up, if you proove to them the above, then you will pass and take off and become a super soldier and all that crazy jazz.
But just so you know, SF does some cool things once in a while but their main purpose is to teach natives on how to fight their government, pretty much making insurgents (now its training the Iraqi government) and if you are ok with this and you under stand what is going on then the more power to you. If you think you will be dropping behind enemy lines via HALO and stealth killing fools with a knife and doing crazy stuff with explosives, not really.
Hope this helps |

WELL... I know that in the Navy, we were given the chance to try out for the seals in boot camp. You had to pass the tests with better time, and there were written evaluations associated with it as well. Mainly, you're going to want to study up for you ASVAB, and not be a big wussy ;)
(Just kidding about the wussy part.) My best friend is an Army Ranger. It takes a very special breed to pull it off, but if it's what you want, then shoot for the stars brother, you can do anything you put your mind to, regardless of if someone's told you diffrent.
Good Luck <3 |
