How do I change their mind?
|
I want to be a Marine or Navy corpsman but my parents are adamant against it since they're deadset on me becoming a doctor and opening my own clinic after I acquire my medical license and do the required internship or fellowship.
I'm only 16 right now but I want to be part of something bigger and I want to fight for my country. I want to feel that sense of camaraderie but my parents say if I join the military, they'll cut me out of their life in case I inadvertently recruit my younger brother who is starting to talk about the USMC, as well.
I'm their only girl and I think some of it is their fear but their responses to what I want isn't making me confident in my decision.
I'm really close to my parents and my siblings and it would kill me to leave and come back to no family support but I really want to be a Marine or Navy corpsman. How do I help them become more open-minded towards my decision?

Maybe you could satisfy both at least a bit. Go to medical school, then become a Navy doctor. The Navy provides the doctors for the Marines, the Marines do not have doctors. |

Wait till your 18. If you still want to join then, there will be plenty of time.
P.S.- A corpsman isn't a doctor. It;s more like a paramedic. If you want to be a doctor, you need to go to college and then med school. ROTC scholarships can help you do that. Wait until you are 18 and then apply. |

FIRST.... as long as you are a minor (under 18).....your parents make the rules.....once you are of age you can join without their consent
SECOND....No matter what your parents say.....They love you and I seriously doubt they will actually cut you off.....but they will be very upset......especially if your younger brother follows you into military service (we wont talk about if he is killed)
THIRD.... I am a professional soldier.....I spent 30 years serving my country.... my recommendation is to "go slow"
Being a medic in any branch of the service is a noble calling.....but being a doctor in the military service is even better...
Lets talk sense.... you "think" you know what serving your country will be like..... but you really do not KNOW..... what if you join and find out you HATE IT..... then what do you do? .....being a Navy medic in civilian life means very little.....
If you are a doctor and find out the military is not what you want..... you still have a career in civilian life.....you do not have to start over
Be smart..... get a medical degree.... apply to become a military medical officer.... if you like it; make it a career.....if not you still have a good future |

do what you want, but give it more thought.
remind your parents/family that its your future, not theirs. |

If your scared to disappoint your parents then you need think about who you are and what you want to do so you wont be disappointed with yourself later on in life.
If you want to join the military, JOIN!!!!
Your parents will come around and if they don't that's their problem.
Its your job to be firm in what you want to do with your life.
Your parents cant live through you, only you can live your life.
If you want to be on a middle ground with your family point out the medical programs that are available in the military.
Your parents are using a scare tactic so you can do what they want.
They're probably being over-protective because your their only girl.
If you need help explaining it to your parents have a sit down with a recruiter and let your parents have at him.
In the end its your life. When your 18 you can do what you want.
It all boils down to this: You can make your parents happy or you can make yourself happy. |

Well, the military does have some pros, but I'll bet you can get a lot of the same benefits from other career avenues. If its adventure and life experience you're looking for..consider joining the reserves, the peace corps or working in poor/underserved areas.
I can't say I blame your parents entirely (except for the cutting you off part). I don't think I would want my children joining the military, especially nowadays.
You can feel camaraderie in many ways in many career paths. Serving your country is very noble, but there are other alternatives to 'making a difference' that might sit better with your parents. I don't think you should just do whatever your parents want, but you should do what you want while compromising with their feelings/concerns as well. Good luck! |

The good news is, one you turn 18, you don't need their permission to join the military.
Tell them its what you really want to do. I'm sure they'll be pissed at first, but they have to understand that its YOUR career and YOUR future now, and you would like their support. I'm sure they'll come around. |

Introduce your family to a few Sailor's and Marines, and to further set their minds at ease... you could sign up with a University ROTC while you study nursing... that way you accomplish your goals and your parents at the same time. |
