How do I find out if I still have a military security clearance?
|
I had a secret clearance at one time but someone said I lost it due to an NJP but then someone else told me horse hockey you still have it because you did not loose your MOS, I been out for a long time but was looking at a military job fair and one of the questions was do you have an inactive clearance, and I didn't know what to say. Additional Details Thanks. :)

You may not have an active clearance, however you investigation may still be good. Call your security manager at your last duty station if you know the number. |

You lost it the day you got out of the military. |

your clearance changed when your status changed. When you get your new job you will have to be reclassified and your background rechecked for your clearance.
I was out for 2 weeks and had to requalify. As if I was going to go "to the other side" in 2 weeks!!!!!
Sorry dude. I'd make reference to the fact that you HAD a top secret security clearance.
Your INACTIVE clearance would refer to your inactive reserve status. Are you on inactive reserve? then you would still have an inactive top secret security clearance. |

Your clearance is not lost because of NJP but it it lost the day you exit active duty...But what will help you is that you had a clearance at one time, and they will ask you this..Your DD 2-14 contains NO information about your status of your security clearance |

If you're out, it's inactive ! |

Clearances are only good for a certain amount of time, so it all depends on how long you've been out. I've been out since 1982 so my top secret is long inactive. |

Regardless what's your status while on the military...You loose your NEED TO KNOW clearance. wheater is SECRET, TOP SECRET or CONFIDENTIAL.
after your end of enlistment.
You can request a copy of your service record to your veteran affairs office so you can prove to a job that you had clearance.
I used my clearance from back in the military to applied for a Company hired by the goverment. |

if you're out of the service, you don't have any clearance
(which is not the same thing as saying civilians can't have a security clearance). flippin' burgers (for example, not to suggest you're in such a menial job) doesn't put you into any need to know situations. |

Unless things were different whenn you were in, Your celarance is NOT lost on the day you ETS. I am active duty and have been over twenty years. You clearance is not granted to you by the military service. It is granted by the State Department and is valid even after you ETS. If you have a TS. It is typically good for five years. A Secret is good for ten. How long ago did you get out? Even on Active duty we have to get an EPSQ done before the expiration of the clearance otherwise it expires and you start to come down on monthly reports as having no clearance. Depending on the MOS, this could be a serious problem. for all of you who are saying that it is lost upon ETS, Why do we have so many Soldiers pushing to get clearances before they ETS?? Why do so many govt. jobs list that applicants must have, be able to obtain, and maintain a security clearance? The clearances are not lost. Maybe there is an inactive status I dont know. |

Anytime you do something that affects your clearance, there is a lot of paperwork. You would have at least signed a acknowledgement for your NJP which would have stated how it affected your clearance status (revoked, suspended, etc,), if
it did at all.
if you didn't sign anything that informed you of any change to your clearance status then you still had it. However once you left the service, you lost that MOS and your clearance status as well, but it would still be in your records.
When I was in the Navy I had a high security clearance with the Naval Securty Group. When my enlistment was up I had a job waiting for me with a Defense Contractor. Even though I would be working at the same clearance level in a similar job as my MOS in the Navy, I still had to wait to have my clearance transferred from a Navy DoD clearance to a civilian one.
Next time ,explain that you had a clearance in the military. Don't mention the NJP unless there was any action done that affected your clearance. Just say you had one in the military, but are unsure of it's status. |

You technically lose it when you get out. But it's really just a loss of access due to no more need to know. All the employer cares about is if it was ever revoked and you would definitely know that. that saves the employer a lot of money since the government already did a background check on you.You would get a letter from DONCAF specifically stating they are revoking your security clearance. |

Since 9/11 they have purged the system, mine was listed as inactive (TSC/C/Nuc) until then, it will be kept for about 3 years as inactive unless needed by a gov. job. I applied for a new clearance is where I received this info.

Hi there,
Short Answer: If your clearance would have been revoked while you were still in the military, you definatley would have been made aware. It is a huge paperwork exersise. If you wait longer than 2 years after the last time you had 'access' regardless of the clearance's investigation date, a new investigation would have to be completed in order for a clearance to be granted.
Long answer:
1. Can NJP cause you to loose your SECRET clearance?
--It all is Depending on what billet you occupied and its sensitivity vs. what the charge was. This ties into the next bullet.
--It also depends if your S-2 or FSO (Facility Security Officer) reported the adverse action to the Defense Security Service. The S-2 or FSO has the authority to temporarily revoke your access to classified information due to certain adverse acts which he or she may deem you unsuitable for access.
--If your clearance would have been revoked, you would have been officially notified. It's a big paperwork runaround.
2. SECRET clearances are a dime a dozen and are good for 10 years based on the investigation complete date.
--A clearance will be good for only 2 years 24 months after the date in which your access was pulled (the day you left the service, or signed your debriefing papers). If you wait longer than 2 years after the last time you have been debriefed, the clearance will no longer be valid, or a gaining agency will not have the ability to utilize a completed investigation to give you continuing access without conducting a new investigation.
My answer is backed by knowledge and the below official sources. I hope this helps. |

Don't listen to some of the people on here. Clearances do not expire when you get out of the military there is a time limit.
Top Secret= 5 years from the moment you get it
Secret= 10 years from the moment you get it
I just got out of the navy and i still have my clearance for another 6 years this is especially important for DOD jobs.. It is the same for all branches. this is 100% correct |

If your clearance was revoked you would know it. You should have been debriefed and signed a non discloure statement.
You DD-214 will also list it.
I am quite sure it's inactive as is mine. |

I doubt if you still have it anymore, but having had one, looks good on a resume. Your DD214 won't have it on there but if you had an MOS or Special Skill Identifier requiring one, then you would need a copy of AR 611-201 indicating it. For instance, I had the special skill identifier of A8 on my 19K40 MOS. M1A1 Master Gunner, a Secret Clearance is required just to attend the course and keep the position. |
