How do I get funds to do a military move?
|
My husband is PCSing to Monterey CA with the Air Force. I was left in Denver to coordinate the move. I have a place for us in Monterey and several moving quotes. Thing is, the military is supposed to pay for this move, and as all the quotes I have received so far would leave us $50 in the bank how do I access these funds?

When your husband gets to Monterey, he will have a JSIB (in-briefing) where they will give him some paperwork to reimburse him for his travel expense from where he is now to there (even if the miltary flew him, they will repay for the taxi from the airport to base and food expenses). Then, before he starts class, he needs to go to Transportation to fill out some more paperwork (and sit through another in-briefing) and they will schedule movers to come get your stuff and move it to your new address (and it will cost you nothing). If you don't have a new address yet, it sits in storage until you give them one.
You will have to pay up-front for your travel (whether it be by car or plane- or if you decide to ship everything yourself). Then when you get here, you just have to go fill out another travel voucher and then they will again reimburse you for your entire travel expense. Just takes 2-4 weeks.
If you are low on cash right now, I suggest letting the military move your stuff, that way you only have to worry about paying for your travel right now. |

If you are having the military do the moving, then that is something he needs to set up in Monterey with the JPPSO. They will have professional movers come to your place, pack you up and move your things to that location. You do not have to pay them yourself at all or get quotes or anything else. You just have to get yourself there after the movers have come. If you have a vehicle then you drive there, limit is standard of 350 miles per day for Per Diem, with the mileage close to 1000 they will give you 3 days to travel and get refunded for lodging and meals. If you do it in less then you only get for those days. you will get MALT (mileage) for the total distance. If you do not have a license or a vehicle then the military will pay for your flight there and they should book it for you.
Once you arrive, have him file all the receipts and he will get the Per Diem, MALT, TLE (up to 10 days of temporary lodging between Denver itself and Monterey) and DLA (Dislocation Allowance). |

HE checks into the command then files the paperwork.
if he is reporting to DLI as a student he will not be entitled to get anything up front and he will have to arrange for the movers at his end once he checks in.
if he is reporting as staff/non student status than he can request advance DLA which will be paid out no more than 10 days prior to his checking out of his current command. unless you have as SPECFIC POA that allows you to deal with Finance and TMO, you will not be allowed to do anything yourself.
why are you even trying to do a DITY anyway? unelss everything you own will fit in the back of one small Uhaul and you can towe your car along behgind it is NOT WORTH IT. no amount fomoney you stand to make after the fact is worth allthe backbreaking work that gets done first. |

Just have the military move you. They have moving companies contracted out. They will come to your house, pack up your stuff, put it in the van, and store it for up to 90 days at the receiving end until you have a house ready for them to move it into.
As long as your husband's orders authorize moving your household goods, you will pay nothing.
Alternatively, you can move it yourself and get re-imbursed, but I don't think that's worth the trouble.
When your husband gets to Monterey, he can talk to the Transportation office there to get things started. |
