From what I have heard, you have to be selected to try for it. You can't just volunteer. I heard you will be notified if you are being watched for Recon, and if you show enough ability, you will be offered the chance to try for it. It is not easy to make it through. Yes it is physically challenging, but mentally challenging as well. If you're not mentally in the right state of mind, you won't last.

Its not like the Force Recon you saw in Call of Duty 4. You better know that before you even attempt joining or you will fail terribly.

You apply for it once you are in your regular MOS

You need to make it clear to your career planner NCO that you are seeking a Recon billet so that he/she can keep you posted when some spots open up.

And you have to be in tremendous physical condition, obviously.
