How do I join the Army Core of Engineers and what should I expect?

I'm a sophomore at a major university currently studying Civil Engineering and I was looking into the USACE.

There are two parts to the Army Corps of Engineers. The first is the part that builds levies and bridges and ports and stuff in the U.S., and the second is the combat engineers brance of the U.S. Army, the part that is assigned to big army units to put in land minde, obstacles, to cross rivers, etc. The first part of the corps of engineers has civialians working for it. You have to apply like any other civilain government employee to do that. Google army corps of engineers and you will get their website, and can find out from there how to get a job or an internship. They have some army officers in both parts, but many, if not most army engineer officers are not trained engineers (they don't have engineering degrees). If you want to be an army officer in the combat engineers branch of the army, join an Army ROTC battalion and apply for an army ROTC scholorship. |

Well one thing you can do would be to join the ROTC at your school. Depending on how much longer you will be at your university, this could be a very good way to join the Corps. If you get a scholarship with the ROTC then your tuition will be paid, and you would get a monthly stipend. Plus upon graduation you would be a Second Lieutenant. I would recommend speaking with the cadets and staff of the ROTC at your school, they would be able answer more questions for you. I'm currently a freshman finishing my first year in ROTC, and I love it. I'm planning on branching into the Corps. as well (hopefully I'll get a chance to earn a Sapper tab!). As for the Corps. of Engineers it may be different than you were expecting. The Corps. of Engineers is a much more "hands on" approach to engineering. Combat Engineers are "on the front line" and are commonly in combat. If you are looking for a more academic, less hands-on approach then I would recommend Air Force or Navy. Otherwise go Army all the way! If you have any questions feel free to message me. Check out the links, they should give you an idea of what engineering jobs the Army offers, and a little more insight into what a combat engineer does. |
