How do i know what kind of military coat it is?

I bought in a second hand store in USA a "military looking coat", it`s probably a surplus thing since it has no brand or anything, it looks like this http://www.epicmilitaria.com/shopimages/products/thumbnails/EM_Jacket_12.jpg except that the belt has no holes, it has no pins and the buttons are black and made of plastic so they`re obviously not original. So my question is, i`ve seen online that british army coats look like that... but also do irish, and american coats in WWII. How do i know from which country it belongs? and is there any way to know from what force or division it is? i know it`s from an english speaking country because it has "pressing instructions" inside, written in english. Thanks

If it`s american is it still in use now? because it costed me one dollar in a salvation army store and they had more than one.

as you can see here
it's an American full dress uniform jacket of the ww2 period.. the crowns look odd though, if in fact they are crowns.

I'd say by the look of the lapel badges that it's a commonwealth uniform due to the fact they have a crown on top. I'd look at Brit, Australian or even NZ but I don't notice any similarity to Canadian uniforms of the recent past or even WWII |

It`s a "British" Officers tunic.You can tell it`s British (or Commonwealth) from the Crowns on the lapel badges.
It looks to be pre-1940 and Summer weight so probably Middle East , Asia and/or India issue.
After checking out the pages linked by "sweet fish" - and despite it mentioning the USMC - this jacket is an Australian Officers tunic. |
