You end the war by withdrawing. That is the only way you end that war and it may save thousands of your countrymen.
The Iraq war will never be a success. Saddam had his country under control in the only way anybody can control it. Since he was deposed, the Iraqi people have suffered at the hands of warlords, Al Qaeda supporters and invading troops.
You have to look at what a success would actually be.
Democracy? Who said they want democracy in Iraq? especially our kind of democracy. Are you going to force them to have a democracy whether they want one or not?
Kill all the terrorists? Including all those ordinary Iraqis who don't want American companies stealing their oil or their freedom and forcing materialism on them to poison them away from their faith?
What supposedly was the original reason for war? To eliminate the WMD threat which could be launched in 45 minutes. That means an immediate withdrawl would be a success as it has been proved they have no WMD's and Saddam is unlikely to pose any further threat.......
But that would mean the oil companies illegal investments would go down the pan so I guess the war will continue. |

Yes. Easy.
Declare martial law and crack down.
Then install a dictator.
But no-one seems to have the balls to do it. |

Destroy Al-Qaida and its sympathizers, as well as stabilize the region. "Cut and run" isn't going to work. |

I believe that there is a possiblity of success, but if we want to have success Democrats in the Congress are going to have keep this war going because we are not giving it time for their to be success. Also the new iraq goverenment has to help too |

As they say, "Things are darkest before the dawn ."
When the Soviet Union capitulated the whole world was shocked and surprised. There wasn't much of an inkling that things were as bad as they were, just before this happened.
The success of this operation will be better assured if we were more aggressive towards the two country's behind it, Iran and Syria. It is my opinion that the middle east would quiet down right now, if we took these two to task.
As I write this, Syria is re-kindling the Lebanon crises. It will continue too, until someone gets their attention by flattening Damascus, or some such thing ! |

By defeating the terrorist insurgents and establishing the American way of life for all those poor confused Iraqis. God Bless George W. Bush and the American republican party. |

I think there is a great possibility for success but you won't know about it cause the media doesn't see it in their interest to report any. However if you search deep enough there a reports out there that say that 80% of the Iraquians think things have improved a lot. Then they gave a list of how. It's sad that the media doesn't want to report this stuff and give us more hope. |

The answer is easy. It's the implementation that's difficult.
#1: Aggressively seek out and destroy those attacking US soldiers and their allies (most notably Iraqi police and army).
#2: Continue to train and mentor our allies (Iraqi police and army) so that eventually they can take over their role in a STABLE country.
#3: Identify and implement a plan to unite the factions (Shiite, Sunni and Sunni Kurds) or support a plan to break up the country if they cannot reconcile. Al-Qaeda and Iran are doing the opposite quite successfully.
#4: Mentor the Iraqi politicians.
#5: Aggressively increase security in all levels of Iraqi life.
This creates an ally in the war on terror.
The way to defeat is easier. Do nothing and/or retreat. So long as the politicians tie the soldiers hands behind their backs, they will be frustrated. When the American people and media attack the soldiers purpose; their very presence and sacrifices, they will be disheartened.
It *is* becoming more "Viet Nam" like: The media and American public continue their ungratefulness to the soldier through protest and demands to quit and to remove funding. Other than the things that "lost" Viet Nam, all of which occurred on US soil, the only other things similar to it are that we continue to win every battle, continue to help an oppressed people, and can only lose through our own citizens, media and politicians.
Thank a soldier with more than a yellow magnetic ribbon on the trunk of your car! (If you say you "support the troops", are yours just words?) |

The real answer is by chopping off the head of the snake, (Iran).
But that would be a major can of worms, and Iran knows it. Which is why they are supporting and arming the various insurgent groups in Iraq.
Otherwise, we need to continue to crackdown on the militias and AlQaida until the Iraqis are able to secure themselves. It would definitely be easier if our enemy didn't hear our politicians screaming for us to leave because we can't win. |

We are not willing to do what it takes to "win" in Iraq.
Victory would be a politically stable nation that is not a breeding ground for terrorists.
The only way to do that is to send hundreds of thousands of troops to flood the country and stamp out anything that even smells of terrorism or sectarian violence. We are not going to do that. Sending 20k more was worse than pulling teeth in Congress. The cost would be enormous, and the military currently is not capable of fielding such a large force for any extended period of time.
Even if we could armwrestle Iraq into a relatively quiet state through massive occupation, there's no guarantee than anything short of another dictator would be able to keep a lid on all the sectarian strife there once we left.
Truth be told, we might have been better off if we had bribed Saddam and left him there to deal with things. |

This thread is kind of funny...Some of the answers are so completely unrealistic that I cannot tell whether or not the poster is being sarcastic or not....such as "By defeating the terrorist insurgents and establishing the American way of life for all those poor confused Iraqis. God Bless George W. Bush and the American republican party. "
Are you serious? |

By recognising that Iraq as a sovereign nation has the right to decide its own fate. Now that Saddam Hussein is gone and there were no weapons of mass destruction in the first place, there is no excuse for US troops to stay.
The US with its advanced technology is able to keep an eye on terrorists and keep them out of mischief. |

Yes if this was a real war and they had a real army and we really wanted Iraq, then yes, we could drop one big bomb and turn the hole place into a parking lot! and we could too! but that is not the agenda for the sitting administration!! |

Nope. None at all. Iraq is NOT a country full of terrorists. There are loads of law-abiding Muslims there who just want to live in peace. These terrorists arrived AFTER your illegal invasion. Chances of victory there are the same as stemming Global warming (and America, ironically, is 1 of the biggest bad guys here too) this year significantly. ZERO. |

Make George Bush and his crew accountable for all the lies, bs, and then impeach him good. Oh, and withdraw the troops. That would be success. What do you define as "success"? |
