How do you feel about gays in the military?

I was in the military for 8 years. There were a few guys who (everyone knew) were gay. Nobody really cared. You are who you are.

Same as in any were else, as long as they don't hit on me I don't care what they do behind closed doors.

As a gay man mysef, I do not see why it is an issue. Performance as a soldier does not have anything to do with orientation. Some of the best soldiers have been gay, such as the man who was in the SAS when it was first established and who then re-established it in Malaya after the second world war. He was an ex-boxer, hard drinker and even harder and braver man, so it aint like he was eyeing up the men under his command and worrying about his uniform getting dirty!!! So why should it be an issue if the man is gay or straight if it does not affect his work?

I disagree with it. I mean if they can do everything a straight person can do, what is the big deal? They are people too. I guess the U.S. Military has a fear of the unknown and want to keep it a 'boys club' so to speak. *shrug*

You should really ask what it's like to be straight in the British military - I don't think there are many of these.

well i believe that its should be OK for a women or man to have their life style in the military but their should be rules that what happens in privacy stays their not many people in the military really are too understanding

I'm from England, i'm an ex-paratrooper, i'm not gay.
i can tell you this...... when i see the thousands and thousands of white marble crosses in the french battle fields from the first world war i think and reflect of the many gays that died along side their comrades in bayonet charges on the sound of the whistle...their last moments as the breath left them and thinking to themselves ....our graves will be the same and we did what they did, and what was asked of us we did well.

I'm fine with it. Some of my RAF buddies are gay.I've even shared a room with one on detatchment (seperate beds, obviously)

As long as they can do the job, I don't give a damn if they're gay or straight, male or female, black or white, tall or short, or whatever. And I hope there isn't any affirmative action in the military. I hate that policy: turning down qualified applicants to have a more diverse, but possibly less-qualified, personnel.

As long as they do NOT try to pick up men/women in the military or bother their fellow troops!!!!! As long as they are not too, well, sleazy about it by trying to get dates through the military. I know thats a silly answer, but it is how I feel.
