Find answers to your legal question.

How do you quit the army?????????

I'm apologize if i sound extremely stupid, but i have always wondered Can you quit the army??????

For an example say a soldier got to the front lines and he decided he wanted to quit right there and then, could he ????

Lunnar
No he couldn't. When one initially swears in... one is taking an oath to defend the nation, and take orders from the Commander & Chief at whatever cost. One has also signed a written contract. If one suddenly decides "This isn't for me" screw it I'm leaving.....One would be considered AWOL "Absent without Leave" this could result in punishment or even jail time.

snetterton
No he couldn't. You sign up for a number of years and cannot get out before then unless you buy your way out. If you just walk off the front line, you are a deserter and will face the full wrath of military law. Not sure if you can still be shot for that, though ...

Shadow
you have to sign up for a certain amount of years. or leave... but thats AWOL. my borther was killed in Iraq in '05 unfortunetly

It's not called quitting, it's called giving notice.

Nobody can quit there & then. The time of paying yourself out doesn't exist either as everyone now on the open engagement & not the Notice which was once in force.

Go AWOL or take drugs is the quickest way to get out but you will get an unsatisfactory report from forces & it isn't recommended

All British forces personnel have to serve for 4 years now. Once they have completed 3 years they can give notice by going into JPA (new computer system) and signing off. When they do this they are giving 12 months notice but serve less than that with 28 days terminal leave plus they get resettlement judged on time served.

David H
you can refuse to soldier!
That means you cant do anything like call someone sir or brace up to someone, you would lose all your rights as a soldier, but its possible.

Just sign off, 12months then your free!!!

Navy Sailor - GAI
NO! You should be smart enough to figure stuff like this out before you ever enlist. You have tons of opportunity to do your research before joining to talk to active duty people and everything else. Once you sign your contract it is legally binding and you are in for how ever many years you sign up for.

ioerr
The army can make it pretty easy or pretty hard, depending on how badly they want people like you to go up front and get shot at.

4.) Become a POW

No you can't quit, you sign up for, say, 7 years service, and then say after 2 you wanted to quit, the only way you could is if you buy yourself out - which costs a few hundred pounds. and then they don't have to accept it anyway. if you just run off you're classed as AWOL !!! and will suffer the consequences under military law. my husband did 15 years in the army so he knows, though he says it's probably changed since he got out

Steveh
When you join the Army you sign for initially 4 years. when you reach the 3 year point you can request to leave the Army by signing off, you then have to complete the next 12 month then you can leave. To leave by any other method is not an option, unless it is a Medical discharge or you are kicked out on Disciplinary reasons. I should know I was a Military Clerk for 24 years in my Home Regiment then transfered to the AGC (SPS).

No you can not quit right then and there. If you leave without orders in a combat zone that is desertion, punishable by death. Enlisted people sign contracts that basically says the soldier must abey orders for the life of the contract but the army can do whatever it wants. But no an enlisted soldier (95% of those in th line of fire) can not quit or refuse or just sit down,

Officers cab resign but they sign contracts for specific reasons like flight school plus 2 years, or a tour in Iraq of one year for special pay and bonuses. The average officer on the street can resign any time he wishes.

The military can not be compared to any known civilian job. You can't have you employees having much control over thir lives.

Mrsjvb
nope. all contracts are for eight years. they cannot get out before then, even if they decide they don't like it any more.

This ain't Burger King, you can't just quit when you are tired of it.

You cannot "quit" the Army. You do the time that was specified in your contract in the job that you chose, or you do your time in military prison.

In your example, very rarely would this happen. By the time the individual is on the line, he/she is now fighting for two things: 1) his/her own life, and 2) the lives of his/her friends. Unless you have been in the military, you have no idea how important the folks left and right of you are. They are your family, and you will fight for them. In the few instances where an individual can't hack it, he/she is sent to the rear where they will be medically and mentally examined. If possible, they will remain in the Army, in another career field. If not possible, then they will be released from service.

Just getting up an leaving, tho, will only get you sent to prison, or shot.

You cannot just up and quit like a regular job. The Army is not just a regular job where at the end of the day you can just go home when ever you feel like it. For a full time officer it is a 24 hour job; meaning that if they call you in the middle of the night you have to go do what your commanding officers tell you to do. And for a part time if your called out you still have to go do what they tell you to do. And whether you have signed on for part time or full time you still have to sign a contract with them and then the Army owns you. Once you have served your term (as in four years) you would be given the chance to re-enlist into the Military. At that point you can rejoin or quit. A person can leave by medical discharge; however I do not recommend anyone trying anything to get out that way; for you would have to live with the disability for the rest of your life. Which would not be easy.

ckamk1995
No you can't quit the army in that sense. I guess you could go awol but you still belong to the army in that sense to. You must complete your enlistment. Or risk the fallout. Jail, dishonorable discharge, ect.,.

The army is not a regular job for either the soldier or their family members.

little78lucky
NO...he can however go awol (and risk jail) or insane or get hurt and either go to a hospital or get a section 8 discharge...although if an unmarried female in the army gets pregnant she will be asked to have an abortion or take a discharge (that's what happen to me and how i got out early) although i wasn't looking to get out i enjoyed my service but i strongly disagree with getting an abortion

DavidC
Assuming it is like the Royal Air Force you apply for a PVR (something like Personal Voluntary Retirement). When you apply the military assess your service record, your trade, the amount of training given etc then will give you a price to "buy yourself out".
In your example, could he quit at the front line - in a word No. If he did he could expect to be ordered to continue, refusing a direct order is a very serious matter - he could expect to be court martialed for that, serve a prison sentence in a military prison followed by a dishonourable discharge - which would make it difficult to get a job in Civi street.

Jess x
yes & no.

When you join you get a 3 month PVR period(premature voluntary release date). This means that in the first three months if you do not like it you may leave.

After this you will have to do a minimum of 4 years return of service and then you have to give a years notice. Sometime you may have to do longer if you are going in as a apprentice! x

If you really wanna get out, you can fail all your exams and they'll kick ya out!! x

Big wullie
No, you will have to honour your contract. To walk away from the front line would be an act of cowardice

rngr223
If he disagrees with war, he should have never enlisted. I suspect he did it for the college money as a lot do nowadays. He can just quit if he wanted to, but he would just face UCMJ action. That would screw up his life and limit his ability to be successful in the civilian world. These are the types that I do not want in my Army.

You go to the mental health clinic in boot camp and tell them your ******* crazy and are going to kill yourself. You may stay there as long as boot camp takes, maybe even a little longer, but they can't send a soldier to war who is suicidal. You probably need medical records faxed in showing you were ****** up before you joined and your recruiter hid it. This is a pretty shitty thing to do but there is your answer. After boot camp it is nearly impossible to get out. Like whatshername said you do the time on the contract in the ARMY or JAIL. You can go AWOL, but then, goto JAIL. So there is really no way around it. Its up to your commanding officers/colonel/etc. They're supposed to convince you to stay in or it makes them look bad to their superiors when they loose a soldier. Just serve your time and stay safe!!

Hello Drew,
Well now, let's see what we can do about your question. When you decide to 'join' the armed forces and you pass all the medicals and basic training, it would appear that you are now in the Passing Out Parade, and as such and after all that posing in your new uniform looking proud and impressing your parents and the General or whoever the main soldier guy is, in attendance on that day Saluting at you as you marched by, well man, it seems that you are now ready to be shipped out and wear a whole lot of different uniforms and stuff, haul your weapon and a load of bullets to make it go Bang! and all this equipment to be carried by you under a tin hat, you are on your way to visit people in warm foreign climes and KILL them. Jeepers man, after all that fuss 'n' trouble I think I would want out too.
If you cannot resign because you are contracted to be doin' this job for however many years you signed on for, you could try Standin to attention, Right turn, shoulder arms, quick march, and head for the main gate, when you get there, try giving the Guard on duty there your weapon, all the Bullets and the letter of resignation you write after you read this, then Stand at ease, turn right again and just stroll freely out of that gate, what's he going to do, that Guard, shoot you in the back? I don't think so, but you might want to consider , thinking now for a while, did you miss out reading the get out clause,in the forms you signed when you join the Armed Forces, if, there isn't a get out clause you signed an illegal document and that my dear Drew, is your first get out clause, and the only other one is to just get shot by some lousy foreigner who didn't want you in his country doing Bush's 'N' Blair's Dirty work, just because they want all their OIL..They will try to lie to you and tell you it's terrorists they are after, well if their own countries were as solid on security as they tell us, we all wouldn't even need any army, air force, marines or navy, or a defence budget as outrageously high as it is, So God Bless and Save USA & UK, and bless us all too...
SO, IF YOU HAVE NO CHOICE, BUT TO BE IN THE ARMY, FOR HEAVENS SAKE, AND YOUR OWN, KEEP YOU HEAD SO LOW DOWN, your army boss will wonder if all his soldiers are really ninja turtles... Stay safe Drew, and think of your own survival and sanity, not much help this letter man, but I sure as certain hope it goes some way to answering yours... be careful man....Tony M

no you cant just walk away. you are signed up to a contract that you cant just walk away from. you have to give a yrs notice to leave and you can only do that at the last year of you service. you cant just say i quit and walk, cos you have the strength of the military court marshall to go through for that if you just up and go. even if you injure yourself you can still see out the rest of your service, just behind a desk! anyway, you have to give a yrs notice to leave.

justafriendofurs
just turn ur back towards the army and say bhagooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! (that means RRRRRRRRUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Steve
Well, you could try the "Mash" method and wear a dress; however, that did not work out very well. You can always shoot yourself in the foot, or shoot your buddy in the ***.

Bumpy Shafer
You might be able to buy yourself out

King_Nelson_Brilliant
You could shoot your foot off.

I know someone that got to base and talked to two sargents and they told him that they can get out.. and so he said he wants out he just had to tell the chapel person ( or however you spell it) and then he could come home.. what do they have to all do after that? dont they come home like a few days after? he was only suppose to be gone for 3 months... and like he just went on base the other day and they dont like it, and wants out... what does he have to do yet?
