Have the general population turn over the thugs just as police do in any bad neighborhood.

You need reliable intelligence and the trust of the populace.

That is why we are finally allowing the Bathists to have jobs again. It was ludicrous to have thousands and thousands of disgruntled, unemployed men wandering around.

You outfight your enemy by fighting his style of war at a greater intensity, guerilla and insurgent cannot fight without secure lines of communications and supplies, deny them bases of operation and their form of battle will collapse.

The insurgents are failing in Iraq because the Iraqi have grown weary of the insurgents hiding among them not only drawing fire on them, but firing on them as well.

I don't know... neither do the Americans, obviously

Amustapha
Well, as Mao said, the guerilla is the fish and the people are the sea, so essentially you have to stop the people supporting the insurgents, either through a fortified hamlets approach, as was used in Vietnam, or by killing with kindness , as the military belatedly attempted in RSA. Or, you give in, as the UK did in Ulster, then the guys with the guns take over and, whoops, realise that life is not all so simple. Worked in Cyprus, Kenya, and even the USA!!

Shunter
Two ways.

Firstly. Fight the way they do. Hit. Run. Hit. Run.

Secondly. Hearts and minds. Not every member of the population will have sympathy with the guerilla / insurgent. Get them on your side and you have an invaluable source of information.

The British S.A.S. are world masters. Take a leaf out of their book.

Read "Low Intensity Operations" by General Frank Kitson

Examples of low-intensity operations include the British campaigns against the Mau Mau in Kenya in the 1950s, the Malayan Races Liberation Army led by the Communist leader Chin Peng in Malaya in the Malayan Emergency from 1948 to 1960, Aden in the 60s, Oman in the 70s, against EOKA in Cyprus in the 1960s, and "the troubles" in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to mid-1990s. Since World War II, the British military has engaged in over fifty low intensity campaigns. The U.S. Rapid Deployment Forces were formed to deal with low intensity conflicts.

Lifesabitch
Do it back to them. Oh no we can't, that would be against their human rights and unfair. we must let them get us but we're not allowed to retaliate in case we upset tony benn or skinhead O'Connor or another of those stupid sods.

The Friendly Anarchist
sheer numbers of normal infantry and our own guerilla-trained soldiers, like rangers and seals.

Iraq isn't a good example... they aren't "insurgents"... they're citizens defending their country, home, and families. The US are the insurgents... trying to change their government and way of life to better suit us.

That said, um... nuclear bomb? Yeah, a nuclear bomb would work.

No.

Give the general population six months warning to evacuate, then nuke 'em. Big style.

You cant win a guerilla/insurgency war with tactics that would be palletable to western morals. That non-uniformed person pointing an AK47 at you can drop the rifle, walk around the corner and he/she becomes a fine upstanding member of the community.

I think the best way to minimise any violence is the 'Hearts and Minds' approach carried out by sympathetic, professional military personnel, lead by an effective officer corps.

You have to offer the general population a situation better than the one they are currently experiencing. A programme of effective rebuilding focused on the basics, water, power, healthcare, food and education.

Your in it for the long haul, altering the mindset of a country will take generations.
