I have 5 years active duty and 1.5 years reserve completed. Got out and a few years later I'm planning on going back in the reserves. The question: If I go back on active duty after serving another few years in the reserve, will I have to do 15 more active years to retire or do the years I spent in the reserve reduce that time.
Additional Details
To be clear, I'm talking about getting the active duty retired pay, not the lesser amount reservists get.

Ok, to retire from active duty and immediately collect your pension.
You must have 20 years of active duty service or its equivalent.
You earn one point for each day of active duty, 365 in a year.
You must have 7,300 points to retire after 20 years and collect a pension immediately.
Reservist earn one point for each day of drill or training.
Plus there are bonus points you can earn in the reserves.
But a typical reservist earns around 60 points a year.
Translated to active duty time, one year of reserve duty equals two months of active duty time.
So if you did not get called to active duty, 6 years of reserve time, would equal one year of active duty service. |

Only Active Federal Service (i.e. deployments or Title 10 mobilizations) or Tiltle 32 AGR counts toward an Active Duty Pension. Any other time (drill or AT) counts toward a Reserve Pension. |

The sat yrs in reserve duty do not count toward retirement for active duty. I believe the reasoning behind it is why should they give you equal active duty retirement pay if you did 20 yrs active duty or 4 yrs active and 16 yrs reserve? |

you accrue points towards retirement. active time counts towards retirement. active 4 years is 4 years worth of points. 30 years is the standard term for reservists to accrue the necessary points to achieve full retirement. you get a point a day towards retirement for annual tours and for time activated. you also get 4 points for your drill weekends. since you had 5 years active duty you should be eligible for full retirement in less than 30 years. |
