How does the job selection process go for Air Force Reserves?

From what I understand so far, it can be difficult to find the job you want for active Air Force, but does it go the same way with Reserves. Will I have to wait for a posisition to open or will I be able to sign up for the job I want right away. I am not sure if that made much since.

In the AF Reserve... You will take the ASVAB and get your score back and then you and your recruiter will go over the job openings for the base you are looking at. Once you find a job opening, your recruiter will nab the spot and it is yours. You will have all your dates for shipping out and school starts and ends. You will know where you will be and for how long. Your unit will know you are coming in before you leave.

When you enlist in the reserves, you are enlisting in a specific reserve unit.
That unit only has a few AFSC's you can choose from.
They have to be AFSC;s on that units manning chart.
Then they have to have a need for that AFSC.
IE: if they have jet engine mechanics in the reserve unit, but they are only allowed to have 10, and they already have 10, then you cannot do that job.
You will take the asvab and get your line scores.
The recruiter will then give you a list of the jobs available in that Reserve unit and will see which ones you qualify for.
Then you choose the job you want, from the list.
You cannot choose any job, like you can in the active duty air force.
Only the jobs that reserve unit needs, that you qualify for.
You will be lucky if you are offered more than 3 jobs to choose from.
NOTE: you cannot enlist under an open contract in the reserves or national guard., everyone has a guarenteed job. |

It is better to go in with an open category such as general, electronic, mechanical, admin, most of the jobs are open in basic training, you will leave sooner and you have a good possibilty of getting the job you want |
