I have heard that you get mad money overseas. What are the specific allowances for this? I'm still a little confused. My BAH gets replaced with OHA, so I see no more of that money. OCOLA is only about $400.
I don't see it. Am I missing something here? Where's the extra money everyone is talking about?

Please remember OHA is not like BAH, OHA is the exact amount of your "rent". Also the utilities allowance may cover some months, but not others.
Not sure I would term it higher, consider cost of living is higher. COLA is adjusted monthly (bi-weekly) in relationship with the exchange rate yen to dollar, but keep in mind in actuality it changes daily!
Just to Clarify - OHA is set by rank, if you find a place (which by the way all housing has to be approved) but it is more then your "OHA" limit, you will and can pay the additional our of pocket. Just be aware - that your OHA is set yearly in dollars, so if the dollar drops - so does your OHA amount, although your rent remains constant! Several Military Members have been hit by that rather hard when the dollar drops in comparison to the yen! Once again if you find a place cheaper then your OHA limit, you do not get to keep the differance like BAH. |

I didn't feel like I got paid a ton when I was over there... just a little extra.
Where you really make money is Iraq/Afghanistan. Tax Free + whatever hazard/combat/hardship pay is authorized + per diem + can only shop at Amazon.com... |

Right now I'm in Korea, making more money than I did in the States because of:
1. COLA
2. Ain't sh*t to do
3. The Won to Dollar exchange rate is awesome, a beer cost like $2.
When I deployed I raked it in, mostly because of all the stuff Pat mentioned.
Maaaaan, we had one rattyass excuse of a PX where you could only buy like one bottle of shampoo every three months. |

base pay and all that is the same. OHA( the OCONUS version of BAH) is much higher because rents are much higher. BUT there is no pocketing any leftover. If your ceiling is Y$200,000 and you find a place for Y$190,000 you will not get to keep the difference. COLA fluctuates monthly based on the Yen conversion and is given based on FAMILY SIZE..so each member of the family is allocated some COLA as opposed to BAH which doesn't matter how large your family is.
so a single person woudl get less COLA than a married couple, who in turn woudl get less than a family of 4. |
