How is the national guard?

Whoever says the guard can't afford all the gear active duty has, your on crack.

I'm prior active duty, current guard.... and my guard unit uses exactly the same gear as I had on active duty. And we're constantly getting newer stuff all the time. I suppose this could vary from state to state, but where I am, it's a total non-issue

Many soldiers in the guard are like me, prior active duty. Even those who aren't have still all gone to the same training... everyone goes to the same basic traing, and the same AIT regardless if your active duty, guard, or reserve.

Your individual experience with your local unit is going to depend entirely on what that unit is like. I'm actually pretty lucky in that I get to drill with 2 different units, in two different states, on a regular basis. One unit I drill with, i look forward to seeing them every time i have the chance. They're a great bunch of folks and love what they do. The other unit I drill with, well... they make me miss the first unit... ;-)

If your really interested what things are like at your local armory, walk in and say hi to them! Really, there should be at least a full-timer or two at every armory, and if you tell them your thinking about joining, I'm sure they'd be happy to share a little about what they do and what you could expect.

It depends greatly on the unit. Some have their crap together and are great units to be in, others well not so much.

You will serve 1 weekend a month, and 2 weeks a year unless you are activated. You do not get medical or dental insurance unless you pay for it or are activated. You will get uniforms issued. You will go to basic and AIT. You do not live in military housing or receive an allowance unless you are activated.

Great place to be if you want to finish school, are a single parent or just want to serve part time.

i wouldnt join the national gaurd they are state budgeted so they equipment are not as good as the regular army or army reserves, also not as good benefits as the federal funded army or army reserves

Am's answer was right on the mark.
The days of potheads joining the guard to avoid the draft ended a long time ago. Today's National Guard is a slim trim fighting machine. they are just a well trained as their active counter part. But they are home during the month learning civilian skills, taking care of the home front, and providing emergency assistance during disasters
