Well I was in the army, but I pretty sure it is the same for all branches. You can serve a 2year, 3year, 4year, or 6year enlistment. It just depends on what job you pick. When I signed up for infantry they said I could serve a 2 year contract but when I picked airborne infantry they said I could no long pick a 2 year. I have never heard of anyone serving a 5 year enlistment but that doesn't mean it isn't possible. No matter what you pick you will actually have an 8 year commitment. I served 4 years and three months on active duty beginning on June 8th 2004. I got out of active duty on September 5th 2008. I can still be called back to active duty until June 8th 2012. This is the same for everyone.

Anyone joining any military branch will sign an 8 year military service obligation (MSO). Can be any combination of Active, drilling Reservist or Individual Ready Reserve....most common

4 years active duty
2 years reserves or Guard
2 years IRR

FRC
Commissioned officers do not sign contracts and are instead appointed by the President (the actual paperwork is done by direction not by the actual President). Minimum service agreements are also normally 8 years, but you then have to resign or request a release from active duty. Enlisted contracts vary depending on your specialty and bonus, if any, promised. As long as you don’t fall under a stop-loss order, an enlisted contract ends on a pre-determined date.

All contracts are technically 8 years long. You and your recruiter negotiate how much of that is active duty. Contracts are typically 4-5 years long, depending on your job (MOS) and what bonuses or incentives you receive.

The time not spent on active duty is called "individual ready reserve," which is not the ready reserve (weekend warriors). It's basically a list where they can recall you to service.

Thunderstruck
The standard is 4 years service with 4 years inactive. Some jobs are more technical and take longer to get trained in so those jobs could be 5 years.

Mr. Prof
Minimum contract after basic training 5 years

gottcha
8 years with either 2 to 4 years active duty and the remainder reserve duty.
