I have a friend in the Marines in Fort Leonard Wood, and he has test positive on a drug test for Marijuana and Ecstasy. He wants to leave the core, and wonders how long the process takes for the discharge takes place?

Fort Lenard Wood houses mainly the Army, but as well as the Marines, Navy and Air Force.

One thing that doesn't process quickly is the discharge procedures at FLW. I saw my entire company graduate and ship out, while I continued to wash dishes for weeks. You can be stuck in limbo for quite a while. |

we had guys that took up to a year to process AFTER they did their time in the brig. That whole time, they were on restriction, confined to the barracks, and doing extra duties. |

A misconduct discharge can result from a pattern of minor disciplinary infractions, a serious military offense, or a conviction by civilian authorities. Common misconduct offenses include drug use and unauthorized absence. If you're thinking of trying to get out for misconduct, you're taking a big risk. Most offenses resulting in a misconduct discharge are also punishable by court-martial, and you could wind up in prison with a bad conduct or dishonorable discharge.
If your command wants to give you a misconduct discharge, the commander must first try to "rehabilitate" you--give you another chance. If the command still decides, against your will, that you should be discharged, you can challenge it. You have the right to a lawyer and to an Administrative Board hearing where you can explain your behavior or defend yourself against unfair accusations. The hearing officers and NCOs will decide if you should be discharged, and what character of discharge (Honorable, General, or OTH) to recommend. Misconduct discharges are usually Under "Other Than Honorable conditions". |

Thank goodness he's not in my unit, I'm looking forward to a 72 this weekend. PHEW!!! Screw you're friend, he signed a contract and needs to honor it. I don't care if he spends the rest of it in the brig. What a retard, it's Marines (and in his case I use that sacred title loosely) that give the rest of the Corps a bad name. I bet he's Motor T and supposed to drive Marines around or work on vehicles, the safety of those Marines is put in jeopardy by his willful disobedience to orders. I'd send him to the brig do not pass go and forfeit his pay (ie do not collect $200). |
