How long is the contract when you join the U.S Army?

You have an eight-year obligation. The way it works is that you sign a contract varying between two and six years. That contract doesn't include the time you are going through training; so if you sign up for three years and have to go through a total of 15 weeks of basic and AIT then your contract would be a total of 39 months instead of 36. Not all jobs qualify for two year contracts and the length of your contract can dictate the amount of your bonus and GI Bill. Once you ETS; you are subject to recall through the IRR until eight years after you shipped to basic. So, if you signed up for six years and then got out you can still be recalled for two more but if you only did three years you can be recalled for up to five more. The chances of being recalled are pretty low right now.

All contracts with the Army are eight years. Some portion of this will always be in the inactive reserves (IRR). This is what leads to frequent misunderstanding about enlistment lengths and recalls to active duty. Should you enlist for a three year tour of active duty you will also have a five year period in the IRR when you are subject to recall. This meant very little in the pre-9/11 days, but more and more IRRs were called up for duty. This has slacked off a great deal now.

You may currently enlist for between 3-6 years but the balance of eight years will be IRR during which you have a small possibility of recall. Hope this wasn't too meandering!

This is going to vary depending on your job. Some jobs you may or may not have a say-so in the length...

I'm a 25B, I had to sign for a 6 year deal because I can actually do something on the civilian side when I ETS.
