As a "Vietnam" vet and one who was there, one who has worked for years with hundreds of other vets (some who still remembered this so called "Myth") at the VA hosp, all I can say is you are the only one who still feels this way (this is the second time you asked this)!

As he was returning home was spit on received death threats and even was forced to move from one apartment because of being a veteran back from Vietnam, no matter how you liberals would like to try, you can not re-wright history. I don't know where you get your "facts" that this is a falsehood. As a Vietnam veteran that WAS spit upon, verbal assaulted, and screamed at while walking through an airport when returning from Nam in 1969, I can assure you that it did happen.
Due to my Christian upbringing, as well as my military discipline, I did not react to those that confronted me, but walked on as if they did not exist.

My dad is a VietNam Vet and told me of the many times that he was spit on and called a baby killer. Three of my uncles also told me about being spit on and being treated badly by protestors, so I hardly think it's an urban legend. I also work for the Army today as a civilian and work with MANY Viet Nam Vets who have talked about the way they were treated...I think maybe you need to get your facts straight there buddy.

The facts are, 29 aug 1970 Travis AFB, there were undignified people yelling,gesturing and yes spitting toward an aircraft full of returning veterans. The mixture was both career and draftee deboarding the Boeing 707. There was a chain link fence separating the two elements. There really didn't need to be as the military personell to the man did not respond, but gracefully walked by the gauntlet and toward the customs.About 24 hours later I was in SFO fresh out of the army and 4 days previously was in a major battle near Xuan Loc. What a culture shock. A young man and his girlfriend greeted me as I waited to board a brand new 747. He kept his face within biting distance as he queried me about the number of women and children I had murdered and babies I had burned. He got no response nor recieved any wounds as I had much more respect for my enemy combatants than a smegma like him. Those include people that support his ideology then and now get the same no respect. Bless our troops and the ones who have the resolve and courage to understand we're now at war. RD

You know, I didnâ€™t know until this moment that I lived through an urban legend as well as a war. I got back to Travis AFB and my mother and sister were there to greet me. As we were hugging, I saw three hippies, two girls and a guy, yelling, spitting and cussing and then being escorted out by the Air Police. They had pulled signs out of their clothes that read â€œbaby killersâ€ and â€œwar mongersâ€. Back then, we didnâ€™t call the newspapers anytime something happened. I was a Staff Sergeant Tactical Air Controller attached to various Army units for two years and I never saw or heard of any â€œatrocitiesâ€ until I got back. When John Kerry testified to committing or even having knowledge of these so-called disgraceful acts he should have been court martialed!

STORIES ABOUT spat-upon Vietnam veterans are like mercury: Smash one and six more appear. It's hard to say where they come from. For a book I wrote in 1998 I looked back to the time when the spit was supposedly flying, the late 1960s and early 1970s. I found nothing. No news reports or even claims that someone was being spat on.

What I did find is that around 1980, scores of Vietnam-generation men were saying they were greeted by spitters when they came home from Vietnam. There is an element of urban legend in the stories in that their point of origin in time and place is obscure, and, yet, they have very similar details. The story told by the man who spat on Jane Fonda at a book signing in Kansas City recently is typical. Michael Smith said he came back through Los Angeles airport where ''people were lined up to spit on us."

Like many stories of the spat-upon veteran genre, Smith's lacks credulity. GIs landed at military airbases, not civilian airports, and protesters could not have gotten onto the bases and anywhere near deplaning troops. There may have been exceptions, of course, but in those cases how would protesters have known in advance that a plane was being diverted to a civilian site? And even then, returnees would have been immediately bused to nearby military installations and processed for reassignment or discharge.

The exaggerations in Smith's story are characteristic of those told by others. ''Most Vietnam veterans were spat on when we came back," he said. That's not true. A 1971 Harris poll conducted for the Veterans Administration found over 90 percent of Vietnam veterans reporting a friendly homecoming. Far from spitting on veterans, the antiwar movement welcomed them into its ranks and thousands of veterans joined the opposition to the war.
