How long would it take to become a sergeant first class in the Army?

I'm hoping to go to Georgia Tech and attend ROTC then join the US Army as an Infantrymen then hopefully become a Ranger. I at least want to achieve sergeant first class rank before I resign. But how long would it take?

So, how long does it take to get promoted in the Army? it's dependent on the particular MOS (job) and how many vacancies (due to separations and retirements) there are in that job. On average, however, one can expect to be promoted with the following time-in-service:
•Private (E-2) - 6 months
•Private First Class (E-3) - 1 year
•Specialist/Corporal (E-4) - 18 months
•Sergeant (E-5) - 4.2 years
•Staff Sergeant (E-6) - 8.5 years
•Sergeant First Class (E-7) - 13.6 years
•Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 17 years
•Sergeant Major (E-9) - 20.8 years |

That greatly depends on you and what job you have in the Army. Promotions are based on positions available and on individual performance. For example, the Army must maintain a certain numbers balance between officers, NCOs, and junior enlisted.
It's technically possible to make SFC in 8 years but VERY difficult to do so. A "fast burner" (someone who moves up in rank quickly) might do it in 10 years. For most people, making SFC takes more like 15 years. |

I know someone who did it 11 years and now people who did it in 15 but if you are going to college and ROTC you should get a commission. |

College, ROTC and you want to be enlisted then resign???!!!
If you enlist in the Infantry out of High School and qualify for SF , Ranger, etc.... and all the training, with experience, assignments, combat and continuing your military & civilian education,plus being a high speed trooper, YOU can achieve SFC (E7) with 9 years time in service.
If you are in ROTC, why not just commission in the Infantry then apply for SF, Ranger, etc...??? |

E-7 made E-7 in about 13 years 6 years and change as SFC
I am white, male and 37 had no chance of being E-8 or E-9 very political and very affirmative blackchion. But I am getting close to 2,000 a month for life not so bad. I hated the Army (FTA) If your close to 20 years stay in if you can dodge the trouble. It does seem when you hit 16 years they try like hell to find a way to throw your ass out, so they do not have to pay you. Watch out they will try to get you trust me. Take it easy and good luck at the Army.
