US military deaths to date: 4274
Medical Air Transports (Hostile And Non-Hostile): 45,583 (Wounded)
Died of Self-Inflicted wounds: 177
http://www.iraqbodycount.org/
Documented civilians deaths through violence: 91,466-99,861
I agree with the other poster that all the violence, death, and destruction is extremely unfortunate and very unnecessary. The US had no real reason to invade Iraq.
However, the current cost of the Iraq war is more around 661 TRILLION, not million.
http://costofwar.com/
ADDED: That is the worst justification I've ever seen for any conflict. So you're saying since the number killed are low and that since there was no immediate sacrifice by the public as a whole, then people shouldn't make negative remarks about it?
Are you insane?!
I've lost count the number of service members I've seen in military hospitals and military bases that have wounds, many of them noticible, such as disfigurations and limbs missing. Tell them about REAL sacrifice.
Since you're such a big fan of history, US wars have historically generated casualties at a ratio of about one combat death for every three or four wounded. Thanks to tremendous advancements in battlefield medicine and the evolution of more efficient body armors and other protective technologies for soldiers, the Iraq War is producing closer to 10 wounded for every soldier killed. However, those wounds are more likely to be limb-maiming and -eliminating or catastrophic brain injuries.
But you are correct that those service members are "volunteers", but that doesn't take in consideration those that are forced to join the military as a last resort to a poor economy, and those the thousands that were forced back into service as a result of Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).
Thousands of those "volunteers" voluteered to get out of the military as result of the unnecessary conflict in Iraq (like myself), hence the low retention numbers in the US military.
Then there's the catastrophic damage to the US image abroad and US relations to not just the Middle East, but the world in general. It's difficult to say you stand for peace and democracy when you invade a soverign country on a whim and a personal vendetta. And to make matters even worse, it's labeled as a "Crusade" by a former cheerleader who just happens to be the acting president of the US.
And then there's the pain and suffering by the Iraq people themselves.
You can't put a price tag on that.
ADDED: So you're saying that over 2,000 service members die and over 23,000 of them are wounded during peacetime, including about 50,000 Iraqi civilians? Not to mention the non-documented affects of being deployed in a unconventional conflict for long periods and repeated deployments and the effects it has on their friends and familiy?
Not to mention the huge finacial cost as well.
BTW, in the '90's, when the US was at "peace", like you stated, the US had the first Gulf War resulting in 148 Americans killed in battle, the 19 service members killed in the Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, not to mention US military operations in the Balkans and in other areas around the world.
Remember...THINK before you post.
If you're going to give me a thumbs down, at least be a grown-up about it and state why. I stated facts with references. The most of you just regurgitated stupidity. |

Yes, the media ARE right, it's around 4,274. Not too many of them compare Iraq to other wars, however.
By way of comparison, between 620,000 and 700,000 Americans died in the Civil war. In the battle of Antietam, 23,100 men died in 3 days alone.
In WWII, we lost 416,800 troops. We lost 5,100 soldiers on D-Day alone.
Not to discount the sacrifice that ANY service member has made, as every death is a tragedy, but if you compare that to 4,274 over 7 years, you can see how, based on the uproar in this country, how much intestinal fortitude the citizens of the USA have lost. Every single death in Iraq was a volunteer's death. It was someone who knew the risks and took them. In the Civil War and WWII, a great many of those who died were conscripts, pressed into service against their will to fight for the greater good.
Those wars also demanded HUGE sacrifices on the part of our civilians. There was rationing of food, materials, and supplies. People here actually worked hard to supply the war effort. The war in Iraq barely affected ANY civilians, aside from those who lost loved ones. While people were happy to complain about the money spent (which is pennies on the dollar to what is currently being spent), no one aside from the service-members' families would have known about the war had the media not reported on it. |

Less than half the number of US soldiers that died during any 8 year span during the 90's, when we were at peace. |

Its sad. All of these lives would have been spared if we had a non-interventionist foreign policy. If we had only focused on peace, trade, and friendship with all, mutual economic benefit. Appreciate the differences. So easy, yet so impossible with the neocons ruling washington under every administration. |
