There are approximately 56. They are very important to the overall Navel Strategy of the US. They deploy all over the world. Specifics are really unknown, but you can assume they are off the coasts of all of our adversaries. |

The USA has 69 operational submarines. They include both fast attack subs Boomers (nuclear missile boats), and test subs. There is also 5 Virgina class subs under construction with the New Hampshire SSN-778 to be commissioned October of this year. These will continue replacing the aging Los Angles class subs.
They deploy where their missions take them. They could be doing Peacetime Engagement , Surveillance and Intelligence, Special Operations , Precision Strike , Battlegroup Operations , Sea Denial missions all over the world. While the Ohio class maintain their cold war mission of having a mobile ballistic missile threat hidden in the world's ocean in hopes of never having to use the missiles. |
