Classified. Submarines are only capable of taking out large ships and aircraft carriers. They're not gonna spend billions of dollars on MK-48 torpedoes and Tomahawk A,C,D missiles (these are unclassified) on small targets.

I hate these "how many.... " type questions...
Everyone who needs to know the answer to that question already knows, and the country is safer with the rest of us NOT knowing the answer
They navy will bring in whatever ships it feels it can use in a situation... and unless the whole thing suddenly becomes a cartoon... I can't imagine a sub playing any critical role ambushing a lifeboat...

Specific information on US submarine operations is classified, including the number of active subs. If they were being used to thwart pirates in Africa you wouldn't be likely to hear about it. |

While the US Navy can field a good number of Subs. they are incapable of aiding in the fight against the Somali Pirates as the only weapons that they have are Torpedoes and Cruise Missiles.
What is needed are more Gun armed ships to escort the Merchant Ships thorough the area and less negotiations with the Pirates. The first would warn the pirates off th ships and the second would take away the financial gain for the pirates. |

First off why would we want to use submarines against the Somali Pirates. We want them to know we have a military Presence in the waters of Somalia. A Submarine by its nature is not a good vessel for that type of a Presence patrol. Hence why most of the ships there are destroyers and Frigates.
Now could they be used yes in attacks to sink the mother ships the pirates operate their rafts from. They could even be used to NAVY SEALS on land to capture the Pirates leaders on shore. This would be an escalation of the current situation however. Like I said the current idea is to have the Navy conduct a show of force not a good mission for a ship that spends 90% of its time below the waves.
Currently the US has only around 50 attack submarines. |
