As per the 2008 pay scale:
$1,347.00 as an E-1
$1,509.90 as an E-2
After taxes.. prob around $1000 or a bit more after taxes.
You have to remember, you get free food, health care and housing so your total annual income is actually higher that what you physically see.
I'm looking at 20 years worth of LES Statements and see no place where they took any money for Food. Your LES will have Base Pay, Quarters Allowance (even for those who live in the dorms, as slight as it is), Rations (if authorized) and clothing allowance. Deductions will include Federal and State Tax, Servicemans Group Life insurance, US Servicemans Home, Social Security & Medicare. |

If you look at your pay stub closely, you will see "food" is not free... They take out a little each month for your food. |

The rate of pay is different, based on where you live. On average, the gross months pay would be.....$200. In other words, it's low as hell, but for a 17 year old who does not have any bills, no rent to pay, no kids to support $200 may be ok. Serious, an E-1 is at the bottom off the barrell as far as pay is concerned. The best way to do it is go to college, utilize loans if you have to, get a degree, then go into the military at least as an officer, 1LT. But if you are solo, living in the barracks, with no car you will be ok. |
