How much longer can the "surge" be kept up?

before the strain of repeated15 month rotations becomes too much for the military and its members.

The surge is going to be kept up as long as someone with the right button doesn't call it off. That is the reality of the moment.

It is a strain now
If you are for the war read this
General Peter Pace now believes this
If the surge continues past May 2008 then what should be done
18 month tours in Iraq
only 9 months at home with 15 month tours
Have a draft
be willing to sign up and go
Time is running out, if you are for the War where are you going to get your Army from?
Many of our most experienced solders are getting out
with 6 to 8 years, because they do not want a 5th or 6th tour
Families are being torn apart
How we will get the Army to fight this war?

A surge is a surge. A short duration of something of strange. Any longer and its called an escalation of something. In this case War. For some reason I can hear the word "Tet" whispering in the wind

Me, Too
As Bill Maher has explained "The Surge is a Success!" That means the phrase is successful, a Karl Rovian bit of Spin, but in reality, the Surge is not successful at all. A report was printed this week from an Internal Defense Department document which was somehow leaked to the press. The Surge is a dismal failure, with only a few goals met.

Doesn't anyone here read the papers or listen to TV? Turn on the news! Learn the facts! I don't want to sound like Grandma Cranky, but you people are posting in a political forum and I want you to get with it, learn what's happening, and become knowledgeable. You're bright people! Should be a snap for you!

If something is repeatedly stated on television, people start believing it to be true. This is how George Bush started this war, stating the same things over and over, touring the country, spreading fear. He wants to continue this war, hang onto the oil....and threatens to bomb Tehran, which he may possibly do. So he, and his Generals, repeat over and over, "The Surge is a Success," tempered with just enough reality to make it sound true and always urging folks to have patience.....because what they want is about ten years of patience and, even then, this war may not be over.

gen casey who is the army chief of staff (read boss of the whole army) says you will have to change the 15 mos over there - 12 month over here ratio if we don't reduce iraq manning by april 2008.
gen pace who is the chairman of the jcs (read boss of the whole thing) say may 2008.
not that long. that much is just math not politics. what policy decisions are made with this data will no doubt be very political, devisive, and controversial.

as long as the soldiers are sent to Iraq!

Well...we still have about 1.8 million men and women left to send to Iraq if need be. So i would have to say that we could keep it up - and expand it immensely - indefinitely.

marines_sweetie
the surge is already slowing down, they are wanting to bring most of the troops home for the holidays

hunnybblu
it's been too much.......for a few years now. Back to back deployments is takin' its toll on the mental and physical well being of our men and women in uniform.....and their loved ones. However our troops will go for however long they are made to. Hopefully soon, this situation will find an end.. If we can't save the iraqis from themselves... at least we can save our own ppl.

The surge is showing success and is already looking at ending. The next rotation of soldiers is 5 brigades less then the current strength.

Tony
Honestly not long. Our men and women should return home. I understand the concept of providing freedom to those that do not have freedom. But enought is enought. I believe that we need to give them the chance to stand for themself, if not they will always look to us for help. You know it is like when you are rasing a child and you are always getting them out of trouble you have to stop sometime otherwise they will be there expecting you helping hand always. You need to let go.

Very unpopular is the notion of reenacting the DRAFT. But if we continue to send our men to the wrong country for the wrong reason we will surely have to start drafting new victims. Of course there will be deferments to assure that our leaders won't have to send their sons to be maimed or killed. I hope that you know that we are in Iraq because Sadaam tried to kill the lame George Sr. So little George says, "I'll get him for you Dad. I ain't scared. I'm gonna defend your honor." So at the cost of our men, our future, and billions of dollars little George got Sadaam. Mission accomplished.

The stress is apparent as we speak, not only for our military and it's members, but the families left behind. The Congress takes a month off for sitting on their butts, the president takes a rest at Camp David for as long as he wants, however, our troops are practically in harm's way 24/7, you be the judge.

not very long (elections). People are going to be fed up and vote democrat, i can almost guarantee it.
