Is it also true that when you are in the army, they pay your housing expenses? My husband's friend is in the air force and they built him and his family a brand new 4 br house. Do they always do something like this?

For starters pay is based on your rank and years of service. Most join as E-1s (the lowest pay grade). IF you are married you will either receive a housing allowance to buy or rent off post or you will receive family housing on post. In addition if you are qualified for the housing allowance you will receive a food allowance. If you are single you will live in the barracks on post and eat in the dining facility (chow hall).
And they didn't build a house "for him". They built new quarters on the post. He doesn't own it and when he leaves the next person will live in it.

Pay as follows for an E-1:
Basic Pay: $1,447.20/mo
BAS (food allowance IF maried): $323.87/mo (not taxed)
BAH (housing allowance IF not on post): $1,196.00/mo (US average; will be more or less depending on where stationed) - not taxed
Cash Total: $2,967.07/mo or $35,604.84/yr
Tax Advantage: 268.21/mo or 3,218.55/yr
Regular Military Compensation: $3,235.28/mo or $38,823.39 /yr |
