How much rent do the yanks pay for the military bases they have in Britain?

Nothing - due to the fact you'd be speaking German if they had not bailed you out of WWII. Funny hows thats left out of Britain's schoolbooks.

edit: yes, i was a bit smart with my answer, but i really dislike the term "yank". The biggest reason the USA has a base in Britain and other European countries is that no other country has stepped up to NATO or Union alliances with measures to protect against threats. If the bases and missile shields were not there, every European nation would be a sitting target with very limited defense.

Well, you get:
1- Free protection, so you can shrink the RAF, and RN to fraction of their former capability
2- Infusion of US dollars into the local economies: rent, goods, taxes. Paid for by the US taxpayer.
3- Jobs for locals on the bases themselves (See number 2). Salaries paid by the US taxpayer.

EDIT: Any nukes were kept WITH THE FULL KNOWLEDGE of the British Govt.

i have read most of the answers to this question,i have come to this are a lot of very ignorant english people who know nothing of the war or what the americans did in it,they answered the call as many other nations did,and it took the combined effort of all of them to defeat the germans,italians,japanese,i will also suggest that the americans who think they won the war to just think for a moment,if the british who stood up against the lot of them had given in as a portion of winstons cabinet wanted to,thanks to churchill we did not,think,where would the rest of the world attacked fortress europe from if we had been defeated,there is a thought for both non thinkers,we,or i am grateful to the americans for the sacrifice they made,my father was in the 6th airborne, he admired the americans and any soldier who fought the axis.during the war i and my mother were bombed out of our home twice,i personally was shot in the leg by a stray bullet,we waited for my uncle to come back from dunkirk,i lived in ramsgate,my mother and i handed out sandwiches to the returning soldiers,so perhaps we can thank each other for what we all did for each other

i am gllad the yanks are in the uk just think about it would you like to have the french back us up in a war????or even the dutch or poles these lot where useless in ww 2 and nothing changes theyre still useless now.

back in WW2 they supplied us material for the war effort - in return they got free soil
but not exactly sure for how long - i think its for 200 years

Why do all the Americans claim to have saved our 'asses' when an outnumbered RAF completely owned the Luftwaffe which was the first stage of the invasion of Great Britain? That and the Germans were being owned by the Soviets, and the tide was turning in North Africa. It was just a matter of time before Germany was toast, the Americans just acted as a catalyst.

I know I'm not answering the question but these people need to be told.

Nothing - LOL to those who said we get free protection , did you know they kept nuclear weapons in our country without us knowing , they are keeping an eye on something , I don't know what though , but it's time they left , this is not anti US , but I think they should go home , seeing as their civilians want them home , maybe that is true , but why would you need to keep them here , it seems very strange to me , if you could give me a reason , it would not bother me , the government decides which countries you protect , i am not anti US , the military Presence just confuses me , the cold war is over , the fact of the matter is , there is still and under lying reason, but most of your own civilians are fed up of you being over here , and want you home , which is fair enough
