How much trouble can a soldier get into if he is caught with alcohol or drugs in Iraq?

Depends on the unit really. For alcohol, most likely a Company grade Art. 15. For drugs, while deployed, would probably be at least a Field grade if not a court martial.

Depends on the unit. I saw two guys lose two pay grades each for an alcohol incident. That's a field grade article 15, which stays on your record.

If the person who mailed the alcohol is not in the military, then he is not subject to military policies, and nothing can happen.

If someone sends a soldier alcohol, without the soldiers prior knowledge (as happened to me), it is the soldier's duty to turn it in to his leadership immediately.

ALOT---- i was deployed with a guy who's family sent him alcohol and he got caught. He lost rank, received alot of extra duty on top of the scheduell we already had. It does not help that that he is overweight so that is already getting him in trouble. I guess you could say that the possibilities are endless all the way up until the point that you would get a dishonorable discharge from the military which would ruin your chances of getting a good job outside. Not to mention the fact that if you get caught with drugs that are illegal you would be looking at jail time.

They recently busted a Command Sergeant Major to E-8. Some commanders are very serious indeed.

Edit: For those who say they'd get an Article 15 and a dishonorable discharge (or their spouse would), you are wrong, wrong, wrong. The only way that you get a dishonorable discharge is by General Courts Martial conviction. You cannot get a dishonorable discharge as a result of disciplinary action under Article 15, UCMJ.

A General Discharge Under Other Than Honorable Conditions may only be handed down by an Administrative Separation Board or by the General or Special Courts Martial Authority when an individual who has had charges preferred against them selects Discharge In Lieu of Courts Martial.

I know in the AF over here it's an instant Article 15. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. There is no defense on this one, it's covered by General Order #1 in the AOR for CENTAF. Also, for the person sending it, depends if they are military or not as far as an Art. 15, but postal regs will bust a civilian. That's a federal offense.

Be punished by a court-martial under the UCMJ, hard time, dis-honorable discharge ...

General Order #1 is no alcohol. I guess there's a reason it's #1.

They will most likely get bussed down when they are caught drinking, if they used illegal drugs they are done. Reduced to pay grade E-1, dishonorable discharge.

That would depend a great deal on the soldiers chain of command and how far they want to push/pursue it.

The US would hand him over to the Islamic Iraqi authorites who would implement Shria Law. That is when you get caned and your hand cut off in a town square as the people cheer and chant. If he was a woman, he would get gang raped by the local authorities all in the name of Allah.
