more specifically how often do fighter pilots engage in any dogfight?

i mean i want to be a fighter pilot but whats the point if you just sit around?

I would presume when the situation calls for it as in they ran out of missiles. Seems to me to be preferable taking out an opponent at 20 miles with a missile rather than 1000 meters with a gun. Yep, no brainer to a tanker. Good luck to you.

Dog fighting has gone the way of the buggy whip. Today's pilots will off their opponents from twenty miles or more away. Rarely will an enemy aircraft get within striking distance of US fighters. This is why the US rarely if ever engages in aerial combat, it can't find any takers !

very VERY rarely...

almost no air force in the world can take the us planes in a straight up fight.. the last two wars we have fought there have been almost no dog fighting at all...

your best bet for a dogfight in the US military is a training run against an American plane.

Try to become a Navy pilot. If you get carrier duty you will have all the excitement you can handle and, maybe. some which you cannot.
The problem is that perhaps one applicant in 100 qualifies.
You have to be among the best.
