My husband gets it all the time because he's a guy... I typically get told I am a horrible mother for being active duty... So as a female is the military rarely ever. I'm more likely to get criticised for doing what I do. |

Not sure if this helps during the current climate.
But, I used to be in the Royal Air Force.
I was in at the time when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands.
And from the day they invaded, if I was out in civvy street wearing my uniform, I was absolutely stunned, and not a little proud, that perfect strangers would come up to me in the street and shake my hand, pat me on the back, all manner of greetings.
I was young and felt an overwhelming pride in the fact that I was serving my country. |

Not an answer to the question, but a great big huge THANK YOU to those who have answered because they are serving this country.
You never really get the thanks and appreciation for what you do, so I just want to salute you and say thank you for your selflessness in serving. |

I didn't get it that often until I joined my Base Honor Guard. After that I was constantly off base in uniform performing ceremonies and stuff. During those I usually got approached by at least 3 or 4 people. |

All the time! Sometimes it gets embarassing, but i do appreciate it. When i am in uniform i get alot more stares than thanks, Except at lunch, when people often pay for my lunch! its great! |

Well, they do everytime I see them.
I don't care what they are doing, if I see a person in uniform, I thank them. Sometimes I see soldiers in civilian clothing, as well, but if they look at all like they are in the military, I ask, and if the answer is yes, they get a big thanks from me.
Unfortunately, considering the responses I get, I don't think they are thanked often enough, which seems like a shame to me. |

I get it a couple times a day.. it is sometimes awkward, because I don't really see myself as doing anything "special", but thank you for your support, and you're welcome ...
but i try not to let people pay for my meals.. especially if they look like they may not have much |

I'm not a soldier, but I work with vets and they often feel underappreciated. Many people are anti-war, but sometimes think that means they have a right to badmouth those who serve in the military.
I think it depends on if you're in a military town where most people serve or not.
On the other hand I know a soldier who was eating breakfast alone in uniform last week...an old lady thanked him & paid for his meal. : ) |

only 2 or 3 times. I also gotten spit at a few times but nothing hurts more seeing people wanting the war to continue so my brothers and sisters have to go through the horrible things that I had to. some people just have no respect for the military. |

So far, twice in five and a half years, but I rarely wear my uniform when I'm not either on base or en route between post and home. |

Probably not often enough in my civilian opinion! |

you're a great american for appreciating the soldiers...unlike anti-american LIBERALS like barack hussain obama and hollywood liberals and college professors brainwashing our kids everyday about global warming and how america is evil. kids need to be educated by listening to rush limbaugh, sean hannity, and mark levin. they should also watch FOX NEWS.
if i ever got drafted i would run the other way (lol) but i thank those who are out there fighting off those ANIMALS who want me and you dead without ever being forced to go. thank you and have a good memorial day. if anyone needs me, i will be watching the coca-cola 600 on FOX- the only network that isnt run by LIBERALS. |

once they find out, people usually always thank you. If I'm in uniform usually about 4 times a day. I live in the Midwest so that has a lot to do with it as well. |

I'm retired from the Navy. Everytime I wear my ball cap which reflects my status, some civilian will say: "Thank you for your service". I reply: "Thank you for the check".
BTW, no one ever said that on September 10, 2001 or earlier. |

My son told me that some guy in Atlanta called him a "beaner" at the rental car agency. He was in uniform and he's not even Hispanic. |
