Is there any jobs that allow you to be a sailor, other than the military branches? If so, what is the job title? Also, would a discharge from the US Air Force for anxiety disorder prevent me from getting a maritime job?

You can be in the Merchant Marines or get a job with a Cruise Ship company.
There are many different job titles as there are many different jobs on the ships.
With the Merchant Marines you would need seaman ship skills. You could work on the deck or in the enginie rooms. It depends on what is needed. Blitz gave a good answer so I won't repeat it.
For Cruise Ships you don't always need special nautical skills. You could be a black-jack dealer or bar tender. Of course someone has to run the ship and they do need experienced sailors too.
I don't know how bad your anxiety is but know that being out to sea is stressful. If you have an episode you might have to deal with not being able to leave. That is something that you should talk to your doctor about. |

Merchant Marines:
Responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peace time. In time of war, the Merchant Marine is an auxiliary to the Navy, and can be called upon to deliver troops and supplies for the military.
I'm not sure about the medical deal though. I would assume not, since it is a civilian job.
I work on a Navy Security team boarding Merchant Marine Ships through the Mediterranean and the Gulf and it was a blast. They usually work 6 months out of the year and get 6 months off. It seems like a pretty good deal. I hear the pay is nice too.
They have jobs just like Navy ships with your cook, technicians and deck hands. Usually the crews are pretty small. You can also go to the Merchant Marine Academy and become an officer (for jobs like the boat Captain and Chiefs Mate). |
