How will I do in basic training?
|
I leave for Ft Benning on Monday. I've spent the last few months getting in shape, and on a 1-1-1 test I'm at 45 push ups, 50 sit ups, and a 7.5 mile. Wish I could run faster but I just haven't built up that much yet.
Excited and nervous! particular concerns:
1) I'm too old for this #$@! I'm 35.
2) My back hurts like crazy if I have to stand in formation for hours (like we do at RSP. Though RSP is very disorganized.)
3) I'm totally addicted to caffine, and I'll be withdrawling at reception. Makes me irritable as hell. Hopefully I don't haul off and kill a Drill Sgt.
Any war stories? pep talks? Talk me up here, people. Additional Details Wow, looking for a friendly "go get em" and you first two guys were real a**holes. Guess I'll have to learn to live with your kind of people. Way to go.
Of course I want to be there, why would I have signed up otherwise?

wow dude... stop complaining
why the heck did you enlist if you knew you were just going to make excuses for yourself?
you're 35 years old, and you still whine and moan like a 15 year old. grow up
whether or not you make through basic is up to you, not your drill sgt , not anyone else just you. so you decide
hollyy
edit - im not being an asswhole. you're just making excuses for yourself. if YOU don't believe in yourself then give me one reason why I should |

1) Thank you for deciding to serve your country at that age! I respect your decision and commitment to the US military. Personal opinion.. you should've join the Marines but none the less, you are serving your country.
2) Standing around in formation will be the norm. We have a saying in the military "Hurry the F#@* up and wait!"
3) You should've slowly backed off of the caffeine prior to going. Do not go after a DS. If he's anything like a Marine DI, he will make your days in basic a living hell... Trust me.
I think there's a difference between branches when it comes to basic training but the basic concept is the same. It's 90% mental and 10% physical. Never give up, work as a team, learn to kill, and never give up! Live chow to chow, day to day, and weekend to weekend. Good luck. |

Don't worry about basic. For a 35 yr old your 1-1-1 is a good indicator of being able to go over a 250 on an actual pt test.
I went to ft. benning for my basic as well. I was in C 3/47 IR. You'll likely be in that starship, maybe a different co. though. It doesn't seem like you'd be in an 11 series.
I'm 29 and I went through basic last year. Because of your age your drill sgt's wont mess with you very much, unless you're just a screw up. They already know you've pretty much set in your ways and that you know how to deal with stress, communicate with others, and complete given tasks to a standard. That said, if you lack the ability to do those three things they are going to push you harder.
BCT boils down to nothing more than a mind game. The physical tasks can be tough at first, but its not as bad as regular unit stuff (although its not as spread out). The big thing is to remember that drill sgt's are trying to break your spirit. If you have, as you should be your age, learned to recognize and deal with 'bullies' then you'll find 99% of their musings quite funny. Especially when you see the young recruits going crazy over something that was an obvious mind game.
They will tell you that youre part of the worst cycle ever, they may tell you that everyone's going back to reception (the worst place ever), that a new war has started and training has been shortened and that you're all on deployment orders and not allowed to contact any civilians, etc etc etc. Just remember that they won't do any of those things, its all just to stress you out. They will go through all of the motions to do those things, including moving out of the barracks and getting on a bus, but then say something along the lines of they were trying to teach you a lesson blah blah.
The physical tasks and drills will be a ton of fun and you'll want to do them all again (except for the NBC chamber.) You'll hate reception, its full of burn out drill sgt's in their last year of DS duty. You won't think much about caffeine or nicotine or alcohol, wont have the time to think about it.
Keep strict accountability of your gear at all times. take good notes. participate in class. teach other soldiers. lead by example. these things will make it a great experience for you, and your drill sgt's WILL reward you for it; especially around the last 3 weeks.

Yea you're not going to "haul off" and kill a drill Sgt.
Once again this is why I didnt join the Army, listening to grown a s s men crying everynight. |

Well Duh!

1. Your age is fine. If you don't want to go, there is nobody forcing you into it.
2. Take Aleve for the back. Nobody will care if your back hurts. That is your problem. Again nobody is forcing you to go.
3. You need to back off the caffine now. You make any attempt on your drill Sgt. and I can guarantee you will not like what happens to you next.
I have plenty of war stories......As far as a pep talk, I would recommend you get for of a "can do" attitude or you will fail. |
