Kind of hard. That's like telling somebody to not think about pink elephants. You plant the seed in their head... and it's ridiculous enough not to go away.
I'm presuming you're referring to going into combat as opposed to discussing the philosophical pros and cons of war in general.
I've been in combat. I worried a bit before I went and in transit...the first time... I didn't know what to expect. After that I didn't think much about it -- at least not philosophically. It's like going to work the first day on any job. Once I was on the ground, it was as if the training kicked in and I was on autopilot. I just did my job as best as I could.
Problem is that hiding my head in the sand and pretending that if I close my eyes really tight and wish really hard, it'll go away, is either naive or moronic... or both. Reality is the way things are. It's not the way we want them to be. Usually it's not even the way we perceive it. We have to acknowledge it as it is and use it to our advantage, or it'll automatically work against us. So I fought. I got wounded a few times. I had some of my buddies die. We did a lot of damage and took a lot of enemy down. War is sometimes necessary to give silly politicians and diplomats a glimpse of reality.
The reality is that there are some people out there who want us dead. There's no room for negotiation. In dealing with those people, you either kill them, or you die. If you don't want to fight them, unless you want to die, you had better pray there are some people out there stronger and braver than you to protect you. āWar is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing that is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.ā (John Stewart Mill)
I believe that most people who will answer have never been there. And I'll bet most who have been there won't answer.
I'll bet that if you had asked the folks in the Donner Party before they left Missouri if they might consider cannibalism, they'd have probably knocked you flat and called you insane. Yet a few months later they were gnawing on the remains of their dead companions.
Nobody can possibly have any idea what they'd feel if the actually found themselves in combat if they haven't been there and done that. Asking hypothetical questions of people who have no idea what they're talking about isn't going to get you very cogent answers. I guess a few -- those from Veterans past and current -- may be realistic, but the rest are guessing about a reality about which they know absolutely nothing. |

Well, I volunteered for Vietnam back in the day, so I have to it wouldn't bother me much. I wish I was 19 again and I'd be at the recruiters office so fast. I think this time I would go Marines over Navy since I already did 20 in the Navy. |

Um, how can I answer that question without thinking of war?
Oh Well, sorry mate... 2 points! Yay me :) |

I wouldn't go to war. The draft is illegal in Canada and I have no plans of becoming a female soldier. |

I'd feel like a conscientious objector.
I was actually in the military, US Army, served my time and honorably discharged.....but my beliefs have changed and I can see it for what a waste it is now. |

Horrible, disgusting , crying for not getting killed on the front -
Then for what ?
Just a simple logical thinking - why is it required? who is dragging for the war ? What is the truth behind the war ? Is there any best ways to avoid the war ? what would be the impact of war on solders , common man, Innocent people whose families are going to get ruined for generation together ?
Most of the world's wars till date could have been avoided - it is just the leaders, their ideology , wishes, dreams and what not ? brought sorrows and sufferings for human kind.
There is an historical fact that one king - named Ashok ( India) got changed after one war , and then he dedicated his life for Lord Buddha's principles- non violence - no more war, in his time. |

90 percent boredom with the other 10 percent being every emotion known to man all rolled into one. And the first thing that came to my mind when reading that question is war, so it would be very difficult to answer that question without thinking about the main subject. But yeah, we're not in a real war now because one party is not using conventional warfare tactics. We are using more conventional because that's what the geneva convention has limited us to and the anti coalition forces are using unconventional tactics. Anyway, I felt pretty badass because not many people get to say they went to war. And I get to be one of the guys that joined while we were at war so no one can question my dreams of killing terrorists. I eat that stuff up! |

I have been deployed to Iraq twice now with the British Army. War as a term used to describe modern war fair has changed to the term conflict.
When I first went to Iraq, I did feel a little uneasy, but the training did help to calm me as I knew what drills I had to perform if anything happened.
The mortars landing in our camp, exploding around us all day everyday is just something you get used to after a while and eventually, as long as they don't go off next to you, it even starts not to bother you anymore.
So to make it short. How I felt when I went to war? At first a little uneasy but then I got used to it and chilled out.
Hope this helps. |

I've been to war several times.
It's overrated, but some things cannot be solved without it.
The Civil War and WWII immediately come to mind.
Without going to Iraq, Saddam and his perverted sons would still be slaughtering his subjects and neighbors. |

It all depends. If I joined in the army/military/etc. then I would be pretty excited. The only reason why i would have joined is because I believe and love our country so much that I will fight to keep our freedom and are values. I would expect to go to war if i joined
If I didn't join and I was drafted, I would be devastated! |
