Husband living with me on the base in the army?
|
Okay so I plan on going to college and getting a Bachelors degree and then going to the army so I could possibly have a higher rank since I'll have my degree. And go for my Phd part time
Do you think it'll be possible for my husband to live with me on the base? Cause I think if I start at the lowest rank It'd be hard to provide for 2 people. Additional Details And do you think being in the Army and having my masters possibly get me a better rank as a Us Marshal?

My suggestion, since you want to join the army, is to go to a university with an Army ROTC unit. ROTC stands for Reserve Officer Training Corps. Basically you will get part-time training to become an Army Officer while completing your bachelors degree. Oftentimes, they will also give you full tuition scholarship. You can choose to study in whatever field you desire, and upon graduation you would be commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Army (that's an officer). Your salary and benefits should be plenty to support yourself and your husband. Stating salaries for O-1 officers in the military are $2745 per month, and there's other bonuses and incentive pays that you could be entitiled too. Since you're married, you would be able to get a house on post. Your husband would also be entitled to your military benefits as well Here's the website for the Army ROTC program: http://www.goarmy.com/rotc/ and www.goarmy.com/officer
The Army also has tuition assistance and other educational programs that will pay for you get your master's degree.
And to answer your second question, YES!!! Gov't jobs, such as being a US Marshall, have what is called veterans preference. Prior military service individuals are pretty much a shoe-in, as long as you meet the qualifications for the job. And a master's degree will certainly help you become more qualified. |

If you go to college and get a bachelor's degree, you could enter the Army as an officer and that is far from the "lowest rank". You might find that working on your PhD part-time would be a challenge, but I have known people to do it. I did my master's in 12 months while on active duty...a very long year.
The Marshal Service doesn't care about your advanced degree. Experience in law enforcement would be more beneficial in the long run. So working as a military police officer would do you more good. |

First of all, the Army does not have any bases. They have a post. Yes, your husband can live with you on post when you are assigned permanent party status. If you have your degree, you can enlist and apply to attend OCS following basic training. Upon completion of OCS you would be commissioned a 2LT. I think this would go a long ways to getting you into the Marshalls service if you so desire.
A PhD and US Marshall aren't often used in the same sentence. I would recommend a masters or two |

You can rent an apartment wherever you get stationed to, where you and your husband can live together. You do not need to live in the base itself, and to wait for housing is really a long wait. It is always good to join the military regardless of the branch with any kind of degree. The good thing about the army you can gain rank quickly. If you where to join the DeP function before going to Basic, you will automatically be promoted when you graduate to an E-3. from that point you can climb the ranks pretty fast. You will also have a GI Bill, Post 911 bill, and and even school assistance, which is going for free to a college or university that offers veterans that option and your gi and post 911 will be paid to you as stipend pay. Even if you don't want to use the two bills you can transfer them to your husband to pay for his school. And since your married your spouse can get a job in the base, like working for the MWR, just to name one, and everywhere you guys are stationed he will always have that job, so that way he can help with the bills as well. If you guys have kids, the military also offers a daycare program while you guys are working. So even if you decide not to get a degree just yet, you can sign a contract for four years, and than take advantage of those things. Also, Tri-care is the insurance that the military offers, it is free and your spouse will have it as well, along with his military id, he will be able to go onto the base and shop at the post exchange. The military takes care of their soldiers as well as the soldiers family. So just go for it you guys will be fine I give you my word. If you have any questions feel free and send me an email to freddie0701@yahoo.com good luck |
