I'm planning to buy a firearm for personal defense weapon, no previous experience with it... any suggestions?

My personal weapon for home safety was a simple shotgun. I have a lot of experience with firearms and I just went out and bought the cheapest shotgun I could. In a house where ranges are fairly close all you have to do is hold on tight, point and pull the trigger. You can't miss.

As far as pistols are concerned, I found that most people need a lot of experience into order to hit any one and most pistols don't have the real stopping power needed to bring someone down unless you have a lot of training and practice. The higher the caliber the more difficult the weapon is to use.

Why do you think you need your own personal weapon?

Yeah - take it from a man who wore a badge and carried a gun for years - leave your money in your pocket and the gun in the gun shop. You can defend your home just as effectively with a baseball bat, and on the street, your gun won't protect you because the bad guys hit you from behind where you don't have eyes to see 'em coming...they'll take your gun from you and kill you with it.

Seeing you know jack s*** about weapons do us all a favour and stay well away from any weapon, before you either kill somebody accidently or shoot yourself.

Why? Unless you are prepared to shoot first what good is it?
Are you perhaps clairvoyant and will know that precise moment when somebody is going to threaten your life. Owning a gun is more likely to result in the death of someone near and dear to you.
P.S. Going to all the NRA lessons in the world is not going to change any of the above.

Be sure you get the proper training at some gun club. for proper handing and shooting of your weapon.you need to know your weapon and just what it will do for you.

After you buy it contact the NRA and find a certified instructor so you can take lessons on the safety and use of it.

Find a shooting range that has NRA certified instructors and take there to practice. Or else find a friend who knows what he/she is doing and get them to help you out.

First of all if you've never used a gun before you need to arrange for firearms training.

You should never use a gun unless you know how to treat it, carry it, store it, and use it safely.

Otherwise inexperience is a recipe for disaster!

My suggestion is a compact semi-auto with double stack magazine in .40 S&W. That and practice, practice and practice.

Take a course first though. Its important, the life you save may be your own. Like if you screw up and shoot someone by accident you go to prison. Or, worse, you store the gun in a way that some kid finds it and does some killing for you.

Contact some one in the police, armed agencies, military, etc., for advice on what weapon to choose, how to train, etc. And don't forget to check into permits...

Best advice would be to contact your local NRA chapter and inquire about their classes. They will teach you firearm safety and you will learn through experience which gun is best suited for your use.

.22 Magnum revolver is a good starter weapon. Small, and with hardly no recoil.
